The Faint dream of the future on new song “ESP” — listen

On September 30th, The Faint will celebrate their career with the release of the CAPSULE:1999-2016 compilation via Saddle Creek. In addition to highlights from the five LPs they’ve released in that 17-year timespan, the comp will also feature three brand new tracks. “Young & Realistic” and “Skylab1979” have already been revealed, and today the band is premiering the final unreleased song, “ESP”.

With synth notes that wouldn’t sound foreign coming out of a TRON machine and vocals drenched in reverb, “ESP” sounds like the electric sheep of which androids dream. It’s an eerie electronic soundscape, one whose beckoning call you can’t help feeling compelled to answer, even if it’s a bit tentatively. There’s something dark underneath all those digital tones, but it also also seems to hold the wonder of the future.

“We all have crazy amazing dreams from time to time, but I’ve come to realize that some people’s dream lives are even stranger,” The Faint’s Todd Fink tells Consequence of Sound about the meaning of “ESP”. “This song is about being married to someone who has dreams about the future that come true. I used to think that all facts could be explained somehow, but I’m stumped on this. All I can do is sing about how I’d like to meet up with her inside this impossible realm.”
