Backus City Council plans cannabis business zoning discussion

City zoning administration will present options in February.

BACKUS — The Backus City Council scheduled a presentation by Sourcewell on the city's options for zoning pertaining to cannabis businesses for Monday, Feb. 3.

During the Jan. 6 regular meeting, council members discussed bringing Sourcewell, their zoning administration, to provide them with detailed options for creating zoning for cannabis sales.

There could be a public hearing in March.

The council also addressed purchase of the former Backus School playground from Bi-County Community Action, with the intention of selling it to the school eventually.

The city's attorney will work on a purchase agreement for the property.

Reorganization

The council discussed annual reorganization of official businesses and committee members. Very little changed.

The council approved:

  • Official newspaper: PineandLakes Echo Journal.
  • Primary depository: First National Bank North.
  • Signatories: Council member Kurt Sawyer, Mayor Karl Flier, Clerk Nicole Morcomb.
  • Engineer: Short Elliott Hendrickson.
  • Auditor: Clasen & Schiessl.
  • Acting mayor: Flier.
  • Airport committee: Sawyer, council member Troy Risk, Airport Supervisor Dan Miller.
  • Building and equipment: Flier, Risk, Pine River Area Sanitary District.
  • Finance and budget: Council members Ann Birge and Rae Borst, and Morcomb.
  • Fire protection and policing: Sawyer, Flier.
  • Personnel, health and safety: Borst, Birge.
  • Streets, parks and weeds: Sawyer, Flier, Pine River Area Sanitary District.
  • Water and sewer: Sawyer, Flier and Pine River Area Sanitary District.
  • Zoning: Birge, Borst, Sourcewell.

The council's mileage will be reimbursed at 70 cents per mile. Council meetings will continue to be 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.

In other business Jan. 6, the council:

  • Learned due to an insurance denial, Sawyer Timber could be liable for some costs associated with a response to a fire there.
  • Learned streetlights for Front Street are on back order and expected in February.
  • Approved a city cellphone for the clerk and agreed on policies regarding its use.
  • Directed Morcomb to look into getting an updated appraisal for the Head Start building.
  • Swore in Risk, Sawyer and Flier in accordance with the results of the November election.
