North Coast KelpFest! Fort Bragg & Mendocino
Come learn and love all things kelp with art exhibits, workshops, panels discussions, low tide seaweed walks, film and much more...all month long! Josie's artwork will be included in the Kelp! exhibit at the Mendocino Art Center, opening on May 18th. Please come to this free, festive, opening event. Register HERE.

Low Tide Seaweed Walk - morning, and Seaweed Science Social - afternoon
MacKerricher State Park & Noyo Center Marine Field Station, Fort Bragg

A low-tide morning seaweed walk meeting the seaweeds in their home place on the reef and continued at the Field Station for pressing techniques and food and health componants of seaweed. This day is a good companion to Sundays cyanotype workshop. Register HERE.

Art & Algae: Cyanotype Printing with Seaweed and Sunlight
Mendocino Art Center, Mendocino

Josie will introduce participants to cyanotype printing (an alternative photographic technique) using her vast collection of dried seaweed specimens as image-making material. Josie will tell us about her work and how she became so entwined with the fascinating world of seaweed. You will be inspired by algae's diverse biology and ecology, learn to identify a variety of green, red, and brown seaweeds, and become more aware of the importance of a healthy intertidal zone and kelp forest — all while creating beautiful blue and white cyanotypes using the power of the sun. An installation featuring the artwork of five women artists whose practice honors, specifically, the bull kelp that dominates the ocean waters of the Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino coastline. The exhibit will act as a nexus for programming around kelp-inspired issues concerning Northern California and beyond.

July 16 - July 17, 2022
Art on the Beach
Lincoln City, Oregon
Volunteer rakers created 100 yard long sand art depicting bull kelp and sea otter. Information was shared with the public revealing the crucial importance of kelp forests to our oceans and the interdependence of kelp and sea otter.

Come snorkel in the kelp forest with Josie and on into Josie's studio as Sir David Attenborough narrates the story of the bull kelp forest of the California coast as an introduction to global kelp forest issues.

The Curious World of Seaweed, November 18, 2021 - April 24, 2022
The exhibit features forty prints, large and small, from the portfolios that generated the research for the book, The Curious World of Seaweed. An extensive website brings captions, videos, and explanations to your fingertips, truly a marriage of art and science. Specimens from Beaty's extensive algal collection will be on view in cases below the artwork.
