An Instint for Cooperation: A Graphic Novel Conversation with Noam Chomsky

An astonishing graphic novel that brings Chomsky's political analysis to bear on real people's stories on the frontlines of America's struggle for economic justice and human dignity. The Instinct for Cooperation innovatively balances those real-life stories of struggle with conversations the author has had with Chomsky on how best to understand them. Although the themes are wide-ranging, this book is ultimately about the importance and need for spaces of resistance in countering state and other institutional forms of violence. The book is illustrated by Eliseu Gouveia. Thanks to Thomas M. Hill at the Pasatiempo for the Subtext in Friday's edition.

Helen Brooks, Administrator of the New Presbyterian Medical Center
A Look at Presbyterian Health Center: A New and Innovative Healthcare System in Santa Fe
“We are embarking on an innovative healthcare model in Santa Fe,” said Helen Brooks, Santa Fe area administrator. “The new medical center will focus on the needs of patients today—better coordinated care in the outpatient settings where most care already occurs. Our goal is to complement existing services to improve the quality, experience and lower the total cost of care for our community.”

A Mother-Daughter Poetry Duo
Mary Oishi and Aja Oishi
Rock Paper Scissors
Mary Oishi has two poetic voices: one stark and simple like that of her Japanese ancestors, and one that echoes the rhythms of preachers from her upbringing by her American father’s fundamentalist relatives. Both voices sing her songs of truth and social justice.
Aja Oishi's writing draws from ecology, anthropology, and the years she spent in Spain, Japan, and New Zealand. She revels in the uncaged world and makes a living (and a life) by fighting for prisoners as an appellate public defender.
These two magnificent poets are mother and daughter, two generations meeting here in a perfect storm of authenticity, brilliance and craft. -- Margaret Randall, author of She Becomes Time and editor of Only the Road / Solo el camino: eight decades of Cuban Poetry.
