Meet Your 2018 Rock Hall Nominees!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released the list of 19 nominees for induction into the Class of 2018 -- Bon Jovi, Kate Bush, The Cars, Depeche Mode, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, The J. Geils Band (their 5th(!) nomination), Judas Priest, LL Cool J, MC5, The Meters, The Moody Blues, Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan, Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Link Wray and The Zombies.
Remember, to be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of induction. Doing some quick math, the 2018 Nominees had to release their first official recording no later than 1992. Nine out of the 19 nominees are on the ballot for the first time, including: Eurythmics, Dire Straits, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone, Radiohead, Rage Against Machine and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine became eligible for nomination for the 2018 Ceremony this year, having released their first official recordings in 1992.
Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 900 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Factors such as an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.
Once again, fans will have the opportunity to participate in the induction selection process. Beginning Oct. 5 and continuing through 11:59pm ET on Dec. 5, fans can visit rockhall.com/vote to cast votes. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a "fans' ballot" that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2018 inductees. Fans will need to login with a Facebook account or email to vote. Voting is capped at one ballot per day. The final list of the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees will be announced in December, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Inductions, presented by Klipsch Audio, will be held at Public Auditorium in Cleveland on April 14, 2018. HBO and SiriusXM will once again broadcast the ceremony.

Busier Day For Knight

Big day around the radio ranch yesterday at Bonneville Country KYGO/Denver, as the staff fully expected cupcakes and Hawaiian Punch to celebrate the elevation of Patrick Knight to the lofty role of Music Director. Knight (left) will retain his existing position as Producer of the KYGO Morning Show with Tracy, Goose & Guy.
In making the announcement of Knight's promotion, PD John E. Kage said, "I arrived at KYGO one year ago and Patrick quickly showed himself to be a multi-tool player that I could depend on. In addition to producing the KYGO morning show and handling a part of our imaging, he proved to be a valuable asset in the music. He understands the Country lifestyle, the timing of records as it pertains to the audience, the history of artists, and having helped me with interviews and backstage events he also has earned the respect of the labels for his professionalism."
Knight is a three-year KYGO pro who previously spent six years with iHeartMedia Country KEEY (K102)/Minneapolis, working on the morning show and soaking up knowledge like a sponge. Commenting on his enhanced role, Knight remarked, "To be named Music Director at a legendary station like 98.5 KYGO is truly an amazing honor and a privilege. I've been blessed to learn from and be around some of the best in the business like Gregg Swedberg, Eddie Haskell and my current PD, John E. Kage. I can't thank Kage enough for not only believing in me, but also trusting me with this position, and I've had a blast learning from him since he started here last year. Finally, a huge thank you to my family (my wife Becky and daughter Madison) for their continued support in my career." Knight can be congratulated at Pat@KYGO.com.

Broadway Wakes Up In Pittsburgh

CBS Radio Country WDSY (Y108)/Pittsburgh is launching a new morning show anchored by format vet, Broadway. The new Broadway's Backyard debuts Monday, October 9 and will air weekdays from 5-10am.
Michael Young, SVP/Market Manager of CBS Radio Pittsburgh, commented, "Broadway is a pure and experienced broadcaster. We are excited to bring him to Y108 as the newest member of our live and local air staff." Mark Anderson, VP of Programming for the Pittsburgh cluster said, "Broadway brings the total package to Y108. He's dynamic and engaging with a fresh approach to morning radio. Broadway's Backyard will bring an entirely new and unique option to our current and prospective future listeners in Pittsburgh!"
Broadway most recently did mornings on iHeartMedia Country WWYZ/Hartford until June of this year. He previously co-hosted the morning show on WKIS (Kiss 99.9)/Miami and he enjoyed success in Grand Rapids, MI at Country WBCT and Top 40 WSNX. Commenting on his new Steel City opportunity, a clearly excited Broadway said, "I'm excited to join a heritage station with a reputation like Y108's! CBS Radio has the right mindset: Local Radio Wins! I can't wait to debut my new show, make new friends and have fun."
To creatively introduce himself to Y108 listeners, Broadway hosted "Broadway Buys You A Beer" last night at the station's annual Y108 Girls With Guitars concert that featured RaeLynn, Carly Pearce and Danielle Bradbery. Y108 has been without a permanent wake-up show since the late June departure of Ally Butler and Andy Davis.

Wake Up & Smell What's Cooking

RAMP has learned that Alpha Media Hot AC KEZR (Mix 106)/San Jose has parted ways with morning duo Jeff Pope and Marla Davies. Rumor has it the station will be importing the Premiere-syndicated Brooke & Jubal.
Pope joined KEZR in December 2013, following a 13-year run in mornings at iHeartMedia's KGGI/Riverside. He was paired with 19-year KEZR vet Davies, who previously co-hosted the morning show for 15 years with the late Bill Kelly.
In a farewell Facebook post, Pope said, "Dear San Jose: Thank you for an AWESOME 3 1/2 years! Earlier today, Marla Davies and I were let go from Mix 106. From the time I arrived from Southern California, you treated me with love and kindness -- even when my L.A. Kings came back from that 3-0 hole against your Sharks. Thank you for letting us be a part of your mornings, and now I'm REALLY glad I didn't buy a house!" #OnToTheNextAdventure.
• Last week we reported Entercom Country KKWF (100.7 The Wolf)/Seattle had hired former KNIX/Phoenix morning co-host Matt McAllister to anchor a brand new morning show. Now that McAllister (left) is unpacked and on the air, RAMP has confirmed that the show has been rebranded as The Morning Wolfpack with Matt McAllister.
Concurrent with that move, PD Drew Bland takes over the 9am-noon shift, followed by former morning co-host Ellen Tailor, who is now doing noon-3pm. Former Wolf morning show producer Randy "The Biscuit" Stein has found an exciting new opportunity across the hall, working with Seattle's legendary Sir Mix-A-Lot on Rhythmic Oldies sister KHTP (Hot 103.7).
• The Wolf is now looking to enhance The Morning Wolfpack and has put out the call for a new co-host to plug in next to McAllister and Producer Joe Wallace. Interested candidates should visit the Entercom Careers marketplace and apply online for this EOE position.

Spencer's Neighborhood Renewed

Looks like a mutual lovefest at Hubbard Radio's WARH (106.5 The Arch)/St. Louis, which announced it has renewed its vows with Spencer Graves, host of the Spencer's Neighborhood morning show, signing him to a multi-year contract extension. Graves (left) touched down in St. Louis in October 2015, transitioning from WSTW/Wilmington, DE. Graves shares the studio each morning with his talented co-hosts Cassiday Proctor and Brandon "Brando" Luttman.
Moments after the paperwork was signed and everyone awkwardly hugged, PD Scott Roddy said, "Spencer's Neighborhood has enjoyed impressive growth in the two years it has been on 106.5 The Arch. Spencer's dedication to OUR community across the bi-state region and his 'on air' Neighborhood -- including co-hosts Cassiday and Brando -- is unmatched. I'm thrilled to have a topical, interactive, genuine, fresh and fun personality like Spencer leading the on-air Arch Allies."
Clearly on a roll, Roddy continued, "Listeners who want to be entertained by local personalities on their way to work, with stories around the topic of the day, while enjoying phenomenal music variety only have one choice now: Spencer's Neighborhood on 106.5 The Arch!" (jingle out)
After blowing on the contract so as not to smudge his signature, an elated Graves commented, "How can you not be ecstatic about working for a company when the CEO takes a minute out of her day to call and thank you for the work you've done. This is an attitude and trait that goes throughout the company. Hubbard's leadership is what made this easy for me to sign again. I couldn't be more appreciative to have their support."

Cumulus Grip-N-Grin

Glassnote recording act Secondhand Serenade recently visited Cumulus Media's World HQ in Atlanta. The timing was optimal, since Glassnote released the band's new single, "Lost," to radio that very same day. What are the odds? The band's John Vesely went in to perform and say hello to the programming team.
Pictured, (l-r): Collin Jones (Cumulus SVP of Corporate Development & Strategy), Mike McVay (Cumulus EVP of Content & Programming), Secondhand Serenade's John Vesely, Greg Frey (Cumulus VP of Country Programming) and Troy Hanson (Cumulus VP of Rock Programming). Something Funny Going On Here...

With everything going on in the world these days, we were pleased to find out that Kurt Luchs is funny. Luchs, the GM of the NRG Media cluster in Wausau-Stevens Point, WI is releasing a humor book, the awesomely titled It's Funny Until Someone Loses an Eye (Then It's Really Funny). The book, which will be available on Nov. 1 via Sagging Meniscus Press, is the convenient repository of some 50 humor pieces that have been published in The New Yorker, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slate, Kugelmass and Luchs' own literary humor site, TheBigJewel.com.
You should be aware that Mr. Luchs didn't suddenly become humor-enabled this year -- he actually has a long and illustrious comedy resume -- he started contributing to The Onion back in 1996, and his work has been published in many of The Onion's books, including the classic Our Dumb Century, which won the Thurber Prize for humor. He also worked as a television comedy writer back in the day on Bill Maher's original ABC show, Politically Incorrect as well as for Craig Kilborn at The Late Late Show.
Luchs (left) actually broke into the radio business as a comedy writer, first for The Complete Sheet, and then for the American Comedy Network, which he soon began running, thus, sending him down the lucrative path of radio management. He's been running NRG's Wausau-Stevens Point stations since May 2013. So, how does NRG upper management feel about Luchs' literary moonlighting? "They're very supportive," he says. "They believe in work/life balance, and they want their people to be personally fulfilled. That's one of the things that makes it such a great place to work. Plus, they know that all this comedy background is very useful in managing the content and presentation on our morning shows. In radio, being creative kind of comes with the territory." It's Funny Until Someone Loses an Eye can be preordered at Amazon.com.
