SiriusXM & Alexa In A Relationship

SiriusXM yesterday announced that its 200+ channels of awesome programming are now available to subscribers nationwide with Amazon Alexa. The announcement of SiriusXM's skill for Amazon Alexa was made by no less an authority than SiriusXM's own Howard Stern, live on The Howard Stern Show. Customers can now call up Howard 100 or any other SiriusXM channel simply by saying, "Alexa, play... [your favorite channel here]."
A visibly delighted Steve Rabuchin, VP of Amazon Alexa said, "We are delighted that customers can now enjoy SiriusXM's exclusive shows, live sports, music, and news through Alexa. Music, news, and sports are already some of the most popular categories of content on Alexa, and SiriusXM brings even more choices to customers. People with an Alexa device and a SiriusXM trial or paid subscription can simply enable the SiriusXM skill for Amazon Alexa, link their accounts and start listening at home or on-the-go with Alexa."
Jim Cady, who sports the impressively lengthy title of "SiriusXM Executive Vice President of Products, Operations & Connected Vehicle," commented, "Alexa is a leading voice service today by far and for good reason: The ease of use through the convenience of voice control with Alexa. We are thrilled to now deliver to Alexa our critically acclaimed, compelling and exclusive programming that spans all music genres, live sports, talk, live news, and comedy." He added, "Our millions of subscribers can get SiriusXM's great programming outside of the car and wherever Alexa devices can be found. It's as simple as asking Alexa to play SiriusXM." Experience Rice's Final Flashback

It's the end of a three-decade era this weekend at CBS Radio Triple A WXRT/Chicago, as Wendy Rice hosts her final Saturday Morning Flashback show. Saturday Morning Flashback airs Saturdays from 8am-noon and focuses on the music, movies, pop culture and news headlines of a particular year each week. Rice was part of Saturday Morning Flashback when it launched in 1985 and was named sole host and producer in 1991.
"I've been at XRT for 35 years and I've always worked on weekends," said Rice, who interned at WXRT in 1978; after a stint at WWCT/Peoria, IL, she joined the 93XRT airstaff in 1982. "The opportunity to play great music every Saturday has kept me going, along with the support of the loyal listeners who have stayed with us all these years," Rice remarked. "I'm now looking forward to my 'retirement' and to experiencing the novelty of a two-day weekend."
WXRT OM/PD Greg Solk rightly describes Rice as "Chicago radio royalty, "adding, "Her Saturday morning show has been a staple of XRT's programming, and one of the most-listened-to specialty shows in Chicago radio history. All of us thank Wendy for her years of brilliance, both on and off the air."
For her final Saturday Morning Flashback broadcast this weekend, Rice will appropriately focus on 1978 -- the year she interned at the station. "I've had a wonderful run at 'Chicago's Finest Rock,'" Rice said. "I married the boss [legendary former WXRT PD Norm Winer] in '87, raised three amazing kids, and am now dedicated to my weekday gig as a middle school teacher."
Beginning Saturday, July 1, longtime WXRT personalities Frank E. Lee and Johnny Mars will begin rotating as the new hosts of Saturday Morning Flashback, which will run at its new time of 8-11am.

Sun, Aponte Renew Vows

Sun Broadcast Group has signed a multi-year extension with Chief Operating Officer, Julio Aponte. Under the agreement Aponte (left) will continue to head the daily operations of Sun's offices in New York City and Boca Raton and oversee the company's sales department. Aponte joined Sun in early 2013 as Director of Hispanic Sales and was quickly promoted to SVP of Hispanic Initiatives, where he helped launch the Sun Latino Network. Under Aponte's direction Sun Latino has grown to more than 400 affiliates and serves great companies like vCreative Hispanic, PromoSuite Latino, Envision Radio Network and Radio Express. In 2014 Sun elevated Aponte to COO.
Jason Bailey, CEO of Sun Broadcast Group said, "The stories I could share about the ride Julio and I have been on. I know everyone says they work with the best people, but Julio and I have truly become amazing friends during our time together. We've shared some of the highest of highs during our growth and, like others in this industry, we've been through the lowest of lows. Today as we continue our journey with the dozens of people here at Sun who put up with our craziness all day, I can honestly say I could never imagine anyone else by my side but my friend, my brother, the mayor of everywhere... Julio Aponte."
Aponte said, "I am honored to renew my vows with Sun Broadcast Group. This is a testament to my believe that the vision and passion I saw in Jay Bailey, the day we met, as an industry visionary, is still alive today and stronger than ever. I thank my family here at Sun and our amazing partners for standing with me over the years. The best is yet to come for the radio industry and for SUN! And with that said... I do!"

Seinfeld Talks Cars & Coffee

PodcastOne has inked Spike Feresten to host a new podcast, Spike's Car Radio, so says Founder and Exec. Chairman Norman Pattiz. Feresten is best known for his comedy writing, including the classic "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld, and for his enthusiasm for cars as host the television series Car Matchmaker. Originating from weekly hangouts with car talk on the porch of the Malibu Kitchen in Malibu, CA, the weekly show will feature all-star guests who frequent the spot, showing off their rides and enjoying "cars and coffee." The debut episode is available now, with special guest and good friend Jerry Seinfeld, on PodcastOne.com, the PodcastOne app and Apple Podcasts. Seinfeld, who helped develop some of the show's segments, will be a recurring guest, along with friend and fellow car enthusiast Paul Zuckerman.
Feresten (pictured here, center, at the Malibu Kitchen, bracketed by Zuckerman and Seinfeld), said, "For years, I've been driving out to Malibu for a cars and comedy breakfast with friends. This is a way for me to share it with anyone who wants to listen in. I'm really enjoying myself, and podcasting is a way for me to monetize my weekly 'cars and coffee' breakfast. I'm getting paid to talk turbos and woof down eggs." Upcoming guests include Jeremy Piven, Dick Van Dyke and Chris Hardwick.

414 24/7 4U

Back in April we first told you about 414Music.fm, the new super-local, Milwaukee-centric HD2 channel wired into Radio Milwaukee Triple A WYMS (88Nine Radio Milwaukee). Yesterday at 6am, the switch was finally thrown and 414Music.fm began pumping out a non-stop stream of sweet, sweet Milwaukee music, and in doing so, bolstered the longstanding commitment of 88Nine since its founding 10 years ago to play and support Milwaukee bands, according to PD Jordan Lee. The station plays at least one Milwaukee artist every hour and supports Milwaukee bands via its weekly on-air 414 Live interview and performance show and its annual Milwaukee Music Awards.
"We're proud to play all Milwaukee music because it rivals music from any city in the country," Lee continued. "Our playlist ranges from earlier groundbreaking Milwaukee bands to some of today's top artists. The list of Milwaukee music we're playing includes the Violent Femmes, Citizen King, Coo Coo Cal, Field Report, Ish Darr, Trapper Schoepp, Naima Adedapo, Vinyl Theater, Willy Porter, GGOOLLDD, WebsterX, Paul Cebar and the late Al Jarreau."
Milwaukee musicians are encouraged to visit 414Music.fm to upload their music for consideration. So far, about 100 area bands and musicians have submitted music. "This is a perfect time for us to launch this service because Milwaukee's music scene is thriving and deserves the support," Lee said. "It's been a real pleasure to program the station and be reminded about how much amazing Milwaukee music is out there."
