Student News

Rosewood Gallery in Kettering, Ohio is pleased to announce the opening of the 23rd annual The View juried landscape exhibition. The exhibition runs from May 30 through July 7, 2017. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 1, 6-8pm with an awards presentation at 7pm.  Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Go check out MFA Sean Leavell's work in the show!
MFA Alum Holly Cahill co-curated an exhibition in Chicago titled Sashay With and Without History at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago. Reception is June 4th from 12-3pm. It runs through July 15th. Great summer road trip!

The Cincinnati Arts Association has released their fifth edition of the Greater Cincinnati Exhibition Opportunities Guide, which can be viewed and downloaded for free. Check it out to see nearly 200 places in Cincinnati that are interested in showing student work.
Young Sculptors ages 25 – 35 as of competition entry are invited to submit representational/realism sculptures in a biennial juried competition for the 2017 $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Entrants should have achieved a significant degree of success as an emerging artist of noteworthy talent. The winner will become part of the Miami University Young Sculptors of the Twenty-First Century Collection. The post-mark deadline is Thursday, June 8. Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans is calling for submissions to their 21st Annual No Dead Artists International Juried Exhibition. Submit art of any media to receive critiques from jurors and renowned artists Helen Toomer, Gia Hamilton, and Bettina Stiewe. The grand prize winner will be given a solo show for 2018. The deadline for applications is June 16, 2017 by 11:59 PM. For all other questions, contact gallery manager Cyntelle Renteria.
The 5th Catholic International Art Competition is now open to artists of any nationality or religion 19 years of age or older. Works must have been created within the past three years and not previously released for other competitions or prizes. Submissions are due between September 19-26 for preliminary screening. The grand prize award is $43,000 USD with other cash prizes available. More details and the theme summary are available here.
On October 13-14, 2017, the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, Wayne State University, will host SculptureX Symposium 2017, with the co-sponsorship of the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, Saginaw Valley State University. The symposium will feature two keynote speakers; panel presentations; professional development, speaking, and exhibition opportunities for sculpture and extended media students; numerous exhibitions which will take place on and off campus; and networking opportunities for students, faculty, and artists. Job/Internship Opportunities

Freelance position for local bowling alley for 10-15 hours a month @ $10 per hour pay. Duties would include creating flyers for print and social media, preparing the promotional chalkboard in bar, the creation of SnapChat filters, the development of a new Fundraising board, and  the creatation of a new food menu as well as a drink menu. The owner is flexible but does require the student to keep a time log each month. He also requires a  meeting 1-2 times a month to discuss/brainstorm ideas. He prefers to give the student a set of parameters and then let him/her use their creative talents to put it together.  Most of the communication can done via email after jobs are assigned and meeting takes place.  The owner will reimburse the student for any supplies that he doesn’t have in the center as long as a receipt is provided. He also understands the dynamics of the semester and tries to avoid giving work around mid-terms and finals.  IF interested, send your resume to Paula Harper.

Schooloutfitters is looking for an intern, around 20 hours a week (possibly more) to aid in our photo studio production and retouching process. The position is paid, but the hourly rate would vary depending on the applicant’s experience. This would be for most of the summer but may start sooner. The ideal candidate would be very familiar with Photoshop, is experienced & proficient in drawing paths, modifying paths, modifying colors, making selections, and other various retouching tasks. The Art Workshop at Queen City Clay has an art teaching position and a pottery wheel teaching assistant position open for their summer camp. The teaching position requires someone from 10 AM-4 PM from June 5-August 11. Vacation weeks are possible and weekends are free. If you can’t do all of these weeks, you are still encouraged to contact Nancy Kopp at 513-406-4009. The pottery wheel teaching assistant will assist teacher from June 5-23 from 10 AM-4 PM. Apply for a summer program with Operation Groundswell to travel abroad focusing on social justice and working with activists, organizations, and communities. Backpacking with a Purpose allows students to travel to several countries such as India, Tanzania, Southeast Asia, and more in the summer or alternative winter and spring trips.
