Compliments of the Dean, March 2021
You are Cordially Invited...

. . . to attend this year’s First-Year Production, “All’s Fair in Love and Nouveau,” on Friday, March 26, at 7 pm.  Due to the pandemic, this year’s musical play is our first live-streaming virtual show—enabling alumni from around the world to tune in and nostalgically compare their own production to this year’s event.  Ooh and aah at the technology; note the clever incorporation of former FY Production titles; rock to the tunes.  Register for a free ticket to attend virtually using the button link below.  You will then receive an update with the link.  You can still register for the Eventbrite page even if you aren't available to watch in real time.  The page will remain up for a couple weeks, with the video  accessible from there.

Alumni News

Congratulations to Christopher Hanson, CC ’93, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by President Joseph Biden.  Chris shared, “There is another CC alum at the NRC -- Deputy General Counsel Susan Vrahoretis [CC ‘84]. It has been very nice to have someone in the agency who speaks the same ‘language.’”
Kendall Kartaly, CC ’18, is living in Warsaw, Poland, where she teaches students of over 30 different nationalities at an international school and is coordinating with the Embassy of Warsaw and American Corner of Gdansk to host workshops on public speaking.  In these workshops, Kendall uses Amanda Gorman’s Presidential inauguration poem, “The Hill,” to teach speaking to 4th-8th grade Polish students at schools around the country.
Paul Damico-Carper, CC ‘04, has written a new hymn text, Life from Death Is Jesus' Doing, set to a tune from Southern Harmony.  This recording features the Elm Ensemble, which includes several CC grads and is led by Josh Messner, CC ‘02.  The Elm Ensemble, which is both an acronym for Early Lutheran Music and an homage to the elm trees of Minneapolis, brings together professional and amateur musicians with great sacred music and creative worship planning to help keep the church in dialogue with diverse voices from Christian history.
Persuasion, Jane Austen

Our first-year students always enjoy reading Jane Austen’s wise and witty Persuasion each spring semester.  One of my favorite Austen quotes—of so many perceptive passages in this novel—encapsulates well the Christ College ethos: “My idea of good company . . . the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company.'  'You are mistaken,' said he gently, 'that is not good company, that is the best.”
May you find such company wherever you dwell.
With compliments,
