BOYS GOLF STATE BOUND!

Mason Boys Golf continued to “keep believing” and put together a strong team effort at the Southwest OHSAA District Championships at Glenview on Thursday. Posting a tournament third best 308, the team was one of three area teams who punched their ticket to the Ohio High School State Tourney. This will be the Comets first State team appearance since 2012, a great accomplishment and the result of an immense amount of work and sheer determination.

Thursday was a day of great shot making and clutch putting at the expansive Glenview GC. There are 27 holes at the course as the East Course served as the front nine, while the South Course was the back nine. The back tees were used, meaning the event played more than 500 yards longer than the Greater Miami Conference tournament that was held at Glenview last month.

Jack Soper finished with a team best score of 74.  Jake Amann and Cameron Madden also finished in the 70’s shooting 76 and 78, respectively.  See all scores  below:
*Junior – Jack
Soper – 74
*Junior – Jake
Amann – 76
*Junior – Cameron Madden – 78
*Senior – Charlie
Woolson – 80
Senior – EM-J
Galang – 89

The Southwest District is arguably the strongest in Ohio, at least in recent years. The last three D-I state champions — Moeller won it in 2014 — have come from this area.  Mason will join District Champion and defending State Champ, St. Xaiver, along with District Runner-up and GMC Champion, Lakota East at state.  The Thunderhawks have been GMC champions the last four years. Mason has been the runner-up each season.  The last time two GMC schools advanced to Columbus in the same year was 1994 when Fairfield and Lakota were the state qualifiers.

The OHSAA Division 1 Boys State Golf Championships will be held at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio on Friday/Saturday, Oct. 20-21.

BOYS SOCCER
BOYS SOCCER FALLS TO FAIRFIELD

Mason (9-5-2)  hosted Fairfield (11-1-4)  last night to determine who would be the 2017 conference champion. Both teams were 7-0-1 heading into the contest. The match was a close, physical battle between two of the top teams in this area.  An unfortunate hand ball early in the 2nd half resulting in an Indian PK and that was all the scoring on the night.  The Comets settle for GMC runner up as Fairfield went on to win the league by a final score of 1-0.

Throughout the game both teams had opportunities to score traditional goals, but excellent goalie play kept the it close to the last seconds.  Mason finishes with a GMC record of 7-1-1 and a second place finish for the second straight season.

MASON NOW TURNS ITS ATTENTION TO THE POST SEASON. The Comets are the #3 seed and will take on the winner of the Princeton/Edgwood contest on Saturday, October 21st, 7:00 PM at Mason.

GIRLS SOCCER

GIRLS SOCCER DEFEATED BY FAIRFIELD

A game that started in a very awkward fashion ended well for Fairfield as they defeated the Comets 2-1, winning the 2017 GMC title on Thursday night in a showdown battle for the conference championship.
The game started with Fairfield attempting to kick the opening kick-off out of bounds so they could substitute 2 injured seniors who received ceremonial starts on Senior Night.  The kick went to a Mason player who respectfully kicked it out of bounds.  On what should have been a throw in back to Mason Fairfield did through the ball to Mason but then immediately initiated a full on attack, the ball was played by Fairfield towards the Comets end line where a Comet defender shielded the ball and the Fairfield player fell awkwardly and required the cart to remove her from the field.  To Fairfield's credit they came ready to play and used their speed to disrupt the Comets passing lanes and possession.

In the 6th minute a foul was called against Mason 25 yards from the goal and Fairfield delivered a perfect direct kick to start the game 1-0.  Fairfield's disruptive and direct style helped them to keep the ball in their attacking half for much of the first half.  The Comets did muster a few trips into their attacking 3rd and on a Annie Metzger Corner kick a foul was called against the Indians in the Box and Olivia Polnow delivered a well executed PK for a 1-1 score.  With just 90 seconds left in the half the Indians won a corner kick that they effectively finished for a 2-1 halftime lead.  For the half the Comets took 3 shots 2 on goal and the Indians took 4 shots 3 on goal.  The Comets took 1 corner kick to the Indians 3 and were called for 5 fouls to the Indians 6.  Emma Schewe had 1 save on a beautiful dive to her right.

The Comets did bring a stepped up intensity to the second half needing a win to overtake the Indians for the GMC title.  The second half was much more evenly played as the Comets were able to find better possession thru quicker ball movement.  Shortly after the half started Tori Bonno slipped a cheeky pass thru the Fairfield back line for Annie Metzger running free at the goal, the Indian's keeper came way off her line in an attempt to stop Metzger, who put a nice shot past the keeper that looked like a certain goal until a streaking Fairfield defender was able to race back and knock the ball off target just before the goal line.  In addition to quicker passing the Comets, following the lead of Senior Jordan Reddington, also stepped up their level of aggressiveness.  The second half saw both the Comets and the Indians take 3 shots with 1 on goal.  The Indians were called for 5 fouls to the Comets 3 and again took 3 corners to the Comets 1.

Mason finished the regular season at 10-3-3 and 6-1-2 in the GMC.  The Comets (#2 seed) will play their first Sectional match next Thursday, October 19th, at home at 7:00 versus the winner of the #20 seed Mother of Mercy and the # 30 seed Mt. Healthy.
