Tutors at Reach

Tutors at Reach is a California non-profit organization founded in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to bring free tutoring to young students facing financial hardship who could not otherwise afford it. We operate by having volunteers donate their time to tutor children for the betterment of the less fortunate and the overall community.

Tutoring services will be available to all students at our partner schools, which range from elementary to high school. We have just recently finalized our partnership with 32nd Street School, which is located directly across the street from University Park Campus (on the corner of Jefferson and Hoover). This school was carefully selected due to its convenient location and the needs of its students. We are launching this program at several universities across California including UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

Our purpose operates by giving volunteers the opportunity to contribute back to their community in a practical way. Tutoring young people who would otherwise not have access to this type of academic support provides a wealth of short term and long term benefits: they develop more effective study methods and improved comprehension of a challenging subject, and in the process, gain confidence. It will also allow a more seamless collaboration between university students and their community.

To ensure we provide high-caliber academic support, we require our volunteers to have the following requirements: (1) 3.0 and above cumulative GPA (during college or graduation); and (2) successfully pass the subject to be tutored with a solid ‘A’. It is required that each volunteer completes just one hour a week to remain an active member of the nonprofit organization. Additionally, Tutors at Reach is certified by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to award our volunteers with The President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes eligible volunteers who have completed the required number of hours.

Volunteers are provided the opportunity indicate which subject they hold both skill and interest in tutoring. If this is opportunity is something you are interested please contact Arash Babadjouni at asbabadj@usc.edu to obtain a brief application.

UCLA School of Law Fellows Program

The Law Fellows Program provides early academic outreach to high-potential undergraduate, recently graduated, and graduate students with strong academic backgrounds and a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA at a four-year undergraduate institution.  The program is committed to ensuring equity, access, and excellence in legal education.  A strong preference is granted to applicants whose experiences reflect limited familial exposure to post-collegiate education, career opportunities, mentoring, and social support systems. Additional consideration is also given to applicants who have overcome economic and/or educational hardships and challenges, or come from, or have demonstrated experience in economically or educationally underserved communities.  The Program focuses on students’ academic development, with the objective of increasing the participants’ academic competitiveness for admission to law school.  Law Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in outreach activities aimed at serving the various community segments of Southern California.

Law Fellows attend a series of Saturday Academies held at UCLA School of Law in the winter and spring, where they are provided with academic enrichment, career development activities and mentoring designed to de-mystify law school and the legal profession, and also present these objectives as viable options.  The program prepares participating Law Fellows to successfully enter and excel in top law programs and, eventually, legal careers.

The initial deadline is October 20, 2014.  Although we will continue to accept applications after the initial deadline, we highly encourage applicants to submit their applications as early as possible to ensure maximum consideration.  The program activities will commence in January 2015, and admission decisions for the program will be made throughout December.  The application is available online at http://law.ucla.edu/admissions/outreach

For any additional information, please feel free to contact us at (310) 794-4157 or Outreach@law.ucla.edu.
