After a COVID hiatus, Save Our Cemeteries will once again host the largest cemetery race in the United States. It's our biggest fundraiser.

The 1K and 5K courses lace through historic Metairie Cemetery, one of the most famous & historic cemeteries of the South. Established in 1872, the area was previously Metairie horse racetrack and is now a national landmark. The cemetery offers a picturesque tour of Louisiana’s history that includes the resting places of many past governors, mayors, military leaders, and prominent men and women of the business, cultural, political, and social life of New Orleans.

Join us for a unique evening! Tour the first floor of the historic Gallier House and learn about the Gallier family. Then watch a presentation about the funerals of James Gallier Sr. and James Gallier Jr. by Save Our Cemeteries tour guide, Jeanne Wilson. Matt Sakakeeny Lecture and Book Signing Thursday, March 31 at 6 pm

Save Our Cemeteries is delighted to present professor, ethnomusicologist, and journalist Matt Sakakeeny, who will discuss the rich history of jazz funerals. Author of Roll With It, a firsthand account of the precarious lives of New Orleans’ brass band musicians, Sakakeeny will trace jazz funerals' early roots in African and European traditions, developments following the Civil War through the Jim Crow era, to their modern expression and occasional controversies. The snare drums, trumpets, and trombones of today’s brass bands march in a complex interplay with the city’s closely-held local traditions and lucrative cultural economy. Sometimes in harmony and sometimes not, loud and proud or muted and somber, brass bands and jazz funerals continue to influence New Orleans and be shaped by her in turn. Matt Sakakeeny will bring it all together on Thursday, March 31 at 6 pm. Reserve now - tickets will go fast for this event.
