Lighthouse Writers Workshop
Dear Writer:

Good news! The official Lighthouse cat has returned after a long and disconcerting absence. Perhaps you’ve seen her in the parking lot before classes, or snoozing on the porch. The bad news is that her reappearance so close to Halloween has only one possible explanation. She is obviously a zombie cat. Yes, it’s terrifying, but zombies do have a venerable place in literature, so we’re going to let her stay. We’ll just have to show up with pitch forks and torches to protect ourselves. Or is that for vampires? Ogres? Forget it—we’ll just keep some catnip on hand. That should distract her from any murderous zombie rages.

Bill Roorbach
Not even a zombie cat can stop us from bringing Bill Roorbach, author of Life Among Giants and The Remedy for Love, to Lighthouse for another fantastic class. He’ll be here this weekend, Saturday, November 1, for his one-day craft seminar, Life Happens: How to Disrupt Your Characters, from 2:00 to 4:30 PM.

There are still a couple of spots left! Enroll here. Tattered Cover will be on hand to sell Roorbach's latest novel, The Remedy for Love.

Fly-By Writer’s Project with Rebecca Makkai
Speaking of incredible visiting authors, don’t forget to get your tickets to the Fly-By Writer’s Project with Rebbecca Makkai, November 8 & 9. They're going fast!

Makkai will teach two craft seminars and join us for dinner at the Vintage Soiree, where you can meet, greet, and hear her read from her work. The soiree dress code is open to interpretation: go vintage or modern!

Sign up for just one or two events or get an All-Access Pass to attend the whole weekend.

Dramatic Writers Happy Hour and Table Read
Join us for the Dramatic Writers Happy Hour & Table Read on November 7th at 6:30 PM. Have a drink, meet other screenwriters & playwrights and participate in reading some pages out loud—no experience necessary!

If you are interested in having your pages read (10 pages MAX) please RSVP. Please note, this is not a workshop—it’s a relaxed opportunity to hear your story come alive and meet fellow scribes! Actors are welcome, but not required.

RSVP to Jenny Taylor-Whitehorn, jtaylorwhitehorn@gmail.com. Let us know if you're bringing pages!

Steve Almond
The excitement continues! We are thrilled to announce Lit Fest legend and author extraordinaire Steve Almond will return to Lighthouse December 6 & 7. We just couldn’t wait until June to have him back.

Steve will teach a weekend intensive for advanced writers of short prose as well as two craft seminars: How to Make Your Characters Snap, Crackle, and Pop, and How to Write Sex Scenes without Shame.

He will also join us for a special free event, The Football Brawl, on Saturday, December 6, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM. Come duke it out over America’s favorite sport. Hear Steve read from and discuss his latest book, Against Football: A Reluctant Manifesto. More details TBA.
Zombie? Definitely.

Want to brush up on your reading? Come to the free book talk on Rebecca Makkai's The Hundred-Year House
Friday, November 7, 6:00 to 7:30 PM. RSVP

YAC members have written, compressed, and revised short stories while simultaneously running a social media campaign to raise awareness of social, racial, and economic inequalities that “If Not Us” addresses.

See the production at one of three performances, November 13-15, 7:30 PM, at East High School. For tickets, email ifnotus2014@gmail.com or call 303-880-2513
