Dear Writer:
As the Labor Day weekend approaches, we wish you many happy hot dogs, hamburgers, and last hurrahs of summer. Lighthouse will be closed on Monday, but at least there’s no flagging now--plenty of writerly events to take you through the long holiday and beyond.
Take the long weekend to find some direction in your writing, whether you’re working on fiction, nonfiction, or anything in between. Victoria Hanley will teach her fantastic one-day class on Personal Imagery and Your Writing Voice this Saturday, August 30, from 1:00 to 3:30 PM.
Matt’s debut novel, We Are Not Ourselves, has made great waves in the fiction world, including this review in the New York Times. It took him 10 years to write while holding down a day job as a high school teacher and parenting small children in New York City. Which is to say, score one for the good guys!
Also on Saturday, September 13, join us for a free book club discussion of George Saunders’ short story collection Tenth of December, led by Lighthouse instructor Alexander Lumans from 12:15 to 1:30 PM. You can brush up on Saunders to get ready for his visit the following weekend, September 20 & 21, for our Writer’s Studio.
We’ll have fun and creative mad libs, plus info on our expanded youth programming. The Fun Fest runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 1089 Bannock Street in downtown Denver.
We also invite all young writers in grades 6, 7, and 8 to submit to the RMPBS StoryMakers short story contest! Deadline is October 10. Winners and finalists will get to attend a special Lighthouse workshop at the PBS station in Denver, as well as have their stories published on the RMPBS website.
See you later white pants,
The Lighthouse Labor Day Party Committee
