Charlie's Spring Cycling Survival Guide

  • Make sure your bike is safe to ride: Air in the tires, brakes working, chain and moving parts lubed, handelbar, stem and saddle tight, wheels straight? If you have any doubts stop by any store for a check over - better still bring your bike in for an Annual Tune Up! Signup on line and use code "Annual" at checkout for a 10% discount
  • Check your safety equipment: Helmet not cracked, foam not dry. Check date of manufacture (inside helmet) most manufacturers recommend replacing every 3 years, lights charged and working, bell works!
  • Take a short test ride: Do you feel comfortable? Hear any weird squeaks or creaks?.
  • Review the laws - May is bicycle ticket month: Always stop for red lights, stop signs and pedestrians even if they are jaywalking. Ride in the direction of traffic, use a bikeway if a safe one exists. White front/red rear lights are required dusk-dawn and a bell at all times. If you are over 14, stay off the sidewalk. When using earphones, one ear must be plug-free. Keep one hand on the bars at all times. No child under 1 year old is permitted on a bicycle. While there are many more rules and regulations, these are the big ones.
  • Ride defensively:  Signal your intentions, let cyclists and pedestrians know you are passing. "On your left" or a ding from your bell are considered polite.
  • Keep your bike yours: With increased ridership comes increased theft, See Hal's fun  youtube take on this serious topic.  Still not sure if your bike is safe, stop in and ask our staff. See our online lock collection and take 10%  off any order Use code "lock" at checkout.
  • Things I learned the hard way: Hydrate, drink before you're thirsty, eat before you're hungry. Sun Screen is a must, Chamois butter works.  I always wear cycling gloves to protect my hands from nerve pain when leaning on the bars
  • Live longer: Bike to work. British Jounal of Medicine says its so.
  • Have Fun!
