Dear MNPS & Community Member:
Arguably, many people believe that one of the fundamental purposes in life is the pursuit of happiness, whatever that means for each person. Intrinsically, there's nothing wrong with that ideal per se, which is even sanctioned in the Declaration of Independence. However, in actuality, I think we can agree that life is more complex than that. It brings about both calm and storm, a smorgasbord of challenges and opportunities we can learn from and, hopefully, pass on that knowledge to our young children and youth.

Stratford High, East Nashville's neighborhood high school, is a remarkable learning institution where students are prepared for careers in national safety, security, science, and engineering.
Between the school’s two academies, the Academy of National Safety and Science of Teaching and the Academy of Science and Engineering, students have the opportunity to learn about – and have immediate exposure to – the most in-demand job industries, including criminal justice, teaching, BioSTEM, engineering, and interdisciplinary science and research.

The region’s top youth poets, emcees, and spoken word artists compete for their personal growth, a more powerful young writer community, top lyrical honors, the opportunity to appear at the Tennessee Slam Finals, and a chance to participate in the national teen slam in San Francisco this July.
Southern Word creates a platform for youth to speak about the real hopes and challenges of their lives. Discretion is advised for this event as some material may be unsuitable for young children.
