Comets Win 10th Consecutive
GMC All Sports Trophy!

Ten years have past since Mason was invited to enter the Greater Miami Conference.  Its been a decade of winning for the Comets that has produced some lofty athletic achievements, including many league and post season titles.  Once again, Mason has garnered the special honor of being the 2016-17 GMC All Sports Champions, winning their 10th consecutive title since entering the conference in the 2007-08 school year.  Mason outdistanced their nearest competitor, Lakota East, by  a 50+ point margin in this years unofficial totals.
Mason won or shared 13 (12 outright) of the 24 sports titles in the GMC this year.  In the fall season, Mason won Boys/Girls Cross Country, Girls Tennis and Girls Volleyball.  In the winter Mason won Chess, Boys/Girls Swimming, Wrestling and shared Girls Basketball. This spring the Comets claimed league titles in Boys/Girls Track, Softball, and Boys Tennis.
Mason teams finished as league runner-up in the following sports;  Boys/Girls Golf, Boys Soccer, Academic Quiz, Boys Basketball, and Boys Bowling (tied).  Amazingly, the Comets either won/shared, finishing 1st or 2nd, in 19 of the 24 GMC sports championships.
The ten member schools of the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) compete in 24
sports. In each sport 11 points are awarded for a conference championship, 9 for
runner-up, 8 for third, etc. The points are tallied at the end of the spring season and
the school with the highest total gains possession of the traveling trophy. The league
recognition has been annually awarded since the conference was founded beginning
with the 1966-67 school year.
The most AST's won by a GMC school was accomplished by Princeton when they
captured 11 straight titles (19 overall) in a 5-6 team league format 20+ years ago.
Mason holds the record for the longest consecutive winning streak during the modern
era of the 8-10 league format.

This year Mason Athletic programs  received some significant state and national recognition:
  • Mason was one of three high schools in Ohio to receive the “AWARD OF EXCELLENCE”  recognition in 2017.  The award, a collaboration between the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA), recognizes schools that provide exemplary support and promotion of education-based athletic programming in their school and community.
  • Mason was ranked #1 of all Ohio high schools (MAXPREPS and LATERAL SPORTS study) for having the most former athletes currently participating in the fall sports of football, soccer and volleyball at the collegiate level.  Among all high school programs in the USA, Mason ranked #8.
  • MHS was also ranked the #1 high school in the State of Ohio for athletes according to NICHE (web site analytic portal), based on the following factors; number of sports, boys and girls athletic participation and expenses per student.
Hats off and kudos to the Mason Athletic Department, Comet sports teams, athletes and their coaches on another very successful year.
