PTSA Meeting UpdatePlease find notes from the last MLK PTSA meeting (11/14) below. If you have any questions or would like to join the PTSA, please contact co-presidents, Sanju and Sidd Pratap. Principal’s Update:
- Approximately 400 parents participated in the November 8 parent-teacher conferences
- Some parents were concerned that the PSAT for 8th and 9th graders is a shorter, different test than the 10-12 graders are taking.
- Dr. McShepard-Ray confirmed the completion and her thanks for the purchase/installation/upgrade to technology at the school sound systems in the Big Gym, Small Gym, Internet Cafe and Soccer Field. All 4 rooms are complete and functioning
- The theater production of “Once on This Island” was scheduled for Nov 14 through Nov 1
PTSA Update (Sidd Pratap)
- INVEST donations total $30,000, approximately 2/3 of the goal of $45,000.
- 2 Titan’s tickets will be offered as a raffle prize for INVEST donations of $100 or more by Nov 22, and all donations of the fair share $180 will also be entered into the drawing.
Presentation by Counselors (Connie Hensley, Jennifer Nichols, Debra Osborne):
- Naviance is the platform currently used for the college application process, including the transmission of transcripts and collection of letters of recommendation. Counselors recommend reviewing the value of Naviance due to significant issues with the platform which have created struggles for students and staff. The issues include incorrect or confusing messages and errors in transmission, and have created additional work and stress for students, teachers and counselors. Naviance costs $3,400 annually. The MLK license for NAVIANCE ends this school year (2020) and will be re-evaluated for effectiveness based on price/performance and fit to needs.
- The counselors demoed and recommend as an alternative system, the Common App program which is a complete process accepted by many schools. In addition, the TN Transcript Center platform could be used for schools which don’t accept Common App. This system has several positive features, including faster processes, easier tracking of documents, and a more efficient way to make ACT scores available.
TN Transcript Center is a service paid for by Tennessee, not the school or PTSA.

Tennessee Tech's President Visits MLK
On Friday, November 22, Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham visited MLK as part of his "Listening Tour" at high schools across the State. The President met with Dr. McShepard-Ray and a team of MLK staff to explore future collaborations, then spent time with a group of Juniors and Seniors to discuss Tech's offerings and ways the school can meet the needs of our highly qualified MLK graduates. Stay tuned for updates about the TN Tech/MLK partnership!!

Donate to Project Warm
JCL/Latin students would like to help Nashville General Hospital with their 2019 Project Warm. They want to help ensure that patients leave the hospital with warm clothing during this winter season. Nashville General Hospital needs NEW* socks, gloves, hats, blankets, ponchos, sleeping bags, jackets, sweat shirts and lip balm for adults and adolescent children.
** Due to infection controls, NGH cannot take nearly new or gently used clothing. Only NEW can be accepted.
Please think about purchasing an item while you are out shopping for bargains. Send items to the Latin classroom. Once we collect at least a box worth, we will deliver it to NGH. Thank you!

Breaking BoundariesBreaking Boundaries is an event hosted by the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at MLK to help bring people of different faiths, backgrounds, and cultures together through artistic talent demonstrated through singing and poetry.
The MSA aspires to show our connections, embrace our differences, and “break” those boundaries that society tends to build up. It’s an opportunity for young students to speak up for who they are and learn about the importance of diversity in the world around them.
Please come to enjoy a night of intercultural celebration of words and community shown through Nashville’s very own talented youth! Dinner will be served.
Breaking Boundaries will be held Tuesday, December 3rd in the MLK auditorium at 4:30 pm.

MLK/Pearl-Cohn football advances to State Championship Game
Congratulations goes to the MLK/Pearl-Cohn football team that has advanced to the State Championship which will be played on Friday, November 6th, at 3 pm. They won their semifinal game 21-20, the difference being a successful extra point attempt by MLK students Wesley Schelling (long snapper), Jordan Cosby (holder) and Malachi Newsome (kicker). The football team is the first in school history to have a record of 14-0 entering the championship game.
We are supporting the Pearl Cohn Firebirds as they take on Alcoa on Friday, December 6th, at 3:00 pm at Tennessee Tech at the State Championship football game! If you need information about tickets, please see the information below.
