NEW YORK THEATRE BARN'S NEW WORKS SERIES SPOTLIGHTS MIMOSA AND TEN BRAVE SECONDS
New York Theatre Barn
Now in its 14th season, New York Theatre Barn's New Works Series presents exclusive “pre-premieres” of new musicals in the early stages of development. New York Theatre Barn is keeping original live theatre alive during these unprecedented times. From our homes to yours, we are excited to share and experience the magic of live theatre in development.
The next installment on Wednesday, April 14th (tonight!) will be a 1-hour virtual live stream which will include excerpts from two new musicals:
  • Mimosa (NAMT 15-Minute Musicals Challenge Winner) - Book and Lyrics by Lauren Taslitz, Music by Danny Ursetti - Mimosa is a plant with a special gift: she can dance! Mom begs her to stop: What if she’s seen by a human? Then along comes lonely, teenage human Molly, who catches sight of Mimosa dancing and is so delighted by her, she digs Mimosa up and takes her home. Mimosa and Molly become best friends, despite the fact that Molly can’t hear Mimosa speak. Then Mimosa learns something that could save both their imperiled communities, but only if Mimosa can figure out how to tell Molly! Mimosa is a family show about a plant and a human who, by refusing to accept a legacy of despair, remind us that all flourishing is mutual and that, by working together, plants and humans can regrow the garden.
  • Ten Brave Seconds - Music and Lyrics by Will Van Dyke, Book and Lyrics by Jeff Talbott - Sometimes, your entire life seems to happen to you in a single day, right? And sometimes, the thing you're most afraid of saying, the thing you’ve avoided saying, the thing you thought you’d never be able to say turns out to take exactly ten seconds of bravery to get it out there.Ten Brave Seconds is a musical about one day in the life of Mike, a completely average 16-year old who is about to have a completely un-average day. Because today’s the day Mike comes out of the closet. But it’s not just Mike’s big day–today is a day full of everybody in Mike’s life having to face that scary moment of saying something that terrifies you to somebody it might hurt, even while knowing it’s the right thing to do. It’s a musical about those tiny brave seconds that make up the gargantuan moments that tell you (and the world) who you are.The truth is, the scariest moments are over so fast, because that’s what scary moments are–merely moments. And all it takes is a couple of brave seconds to get through them.
Produced by Joe Barros and Jen Sandler, the event streams live on New York Theatre Barn's YouTube channel on Wednesday, April 14th at 7pm ET. The New Works Series has received support in part by NAMT's Innovation & Exploration Fund.
