MOZART & THE MAGICAL FLUTE

As part of the Mainstage Series, the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present “Mozart and The Magical Flute.”
The program begins with Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, followed by Britten’s first musical composition Sinfonietta. The program continues with featured soloist Kathryne Salo who is sure to dazzle on Ibert’s virtuosic piece Flute Concerto, and will end with Mozart’s familiar and iconic Symphony No. 40.
Dr. Kathryne Salo, a Miyazawa Emerging Artist, performs as Principal Flutist for the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and Piccoloist for the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. She also serves as Instructor of Flute at Kellogg Community College and teaches at Ada Conservatory of Music. She completed her DMA at Michigan State University in 2017, where she served as Instructor of Flute that summer. As a soloist, Kathryne has performed with the MSU Symphony, the University of Tennessee Symphony, and Monroe (LA) Symphony. You won't want to miss this incredible performance.

The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra (SMSO) is pleased to invite local school band members to attend a "Flute Master Class" on Friday, March 13, 2020, at 4pm. The class will take place at Southwestern Michigan College (SMC), Dowagiac Campus, Lyons Building in the Band Room. It is FREE to attend and participate!
The “Flute Master Class” is expected to last approximately 90-minutes, and will take place the day before the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Solo and Ensemble, so it is a great time to attend or participate for last minute tips. The SMC flute choir will perform, and students that would like to participate for evaluation should contact the SMSO office at 269-982-4030 to register.
Leading the class is Miyazawa Emerging Artist and Principal Flutist for the SMSO, Dr. Kathryne Salo. Dr. Salo also serves as Instructor of Flute at Kellogg Community College and teaches at Ada Conservatory of Music. She will perform as flute soloist along with the SMSO in the upcoming “Mozart and the Magical Flute” concert at the Howard Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at 4pm. We are searching for the greatest musical talent in Southwest Michigan! Could it be you or someone you know?
We are hosting our very first music talent competition. Talented singers, dancers, and instrumentalists; solo or group are welcome to audition.
Auditions take place at The GhostLight Theatre in Benton Harbor, and there are a limited number of audition spots available.The Auditions are expected to be a fun night with hours of entertainment. Audience is welcome to attend for $10, plus there will be a cash bar.
The final competition will take place Saturday, May 9, 2020, at the LMC Grand Upton Hall during our "Stand Up for Music" event. Winners from two age groups will receive CASH PRIZES!

The SMSO's Annual Floral Extravaganza is a great way to purchase some beautiful blooms while supporting a local non-profit. This year you can choose from geranium bushes, hanging baskets or potted geraniums; potted New Guinea impatiens; potted Dragon Wing begonias; Supertunia Royal Velvet petunia baskets; Tuberous begonia baskets; fan flowers hanging baskets; impatiens hanging baskets or flats and begonia flats.
All proceeds benefit the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra's world-class performances and vital educational outreach programs to mentor our area’s youth.
