Race, Sexual Expression, and Civil Rights Law: A Conversation about the Daniele Watts controversy
Please join us tonight, 11/3 at 4pm for a conversation about Race, Sexual Expression and Civil Rights Law with special guest Daniele Watts ‘07.  Room 3 at the USC Gould School of Law.
The law school has invited Daniele Watts, a USC alumna, for an in-depth conversation about Watts's decision to challenge an LAPD officer during a recent investigatory stop that she perceived to be triggered by social anxiety about interracial intimacy.  The ensuing media controversy surrounding Watts's decision provides us with a unique opportunity to consider the ways in which American cultural understandings regarding civil rights protest are both raced and gendered.  Specifically, panelists will explore how race, class, and gender can both enable and compromise civil rights protest; address the continuing circulation of social stereotypes about interracial intimacy; and, finally, consider the roles law enforcement and media can play in either disrupting or re-instantiating social stereotypes about race and gender in social conflicts.
Seating is limited, RSVP at:  law.usc.edu/go/civilrights

Spring Class Announcement: ITP 479
ITP 479: Digital Law and Privacy primarily focuses on Constitutional privacy issues, with an emphasis on recent digital issues. The course has been very positively received and useful both to engineering students and those interested in attending law school.
This course is intended as an informative course detailing basic concepts in privacy, with an emphasis on electronic related activities. This course is projected to supplement cyber security and forensics studies by presenting and explaining potential issues and pitfalls when engaging in a forensic analysis of an individual’s property.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Spring Class Announcement: Ling 450
Ling 450 ("Forensic Speaker Identification"):  This is a great course for pre-Law students to take.  Studies have shown that students who have studied Linguistics have an advantage when taking the LSAT.  This is largely due to the analytic tools that we provide to our students, which also serve them well in Law School.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Any questions about this course can be emailed to Professor Sandy Disner, at sdisner@usc.edu

Tutors at Reach

Tutors at Reach is a California non-profit organization founded in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to bring free tutoring to young students facing financial hardship who could not otherwise afford it. We operate by having volunteers donate their time to tutor children for the betterment of the less fortunate and the overall community.

Tutoring services will be available to all students at our partner schools, which range from elementary to high school. We have just recently finalized our partnership with 32nd Street School, which is located directly across the street from University Park Campus (on the corner of Jefferson and Hoover). This school was carefully selected due to its convenient location and the needs of its students. We are launching this program at several universities across California including UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

Our purpose operates by giving volunteers the opportunity to contribute back to their community in a practical way. Tutoring young people who would otherwise not have access to this type of academic support provides a wealth of short term and long term benefits: they develop more effective study methods and improved comprehension of a challenging subject, and in the process, gain confidence. It will also allow a more seamless collaboration between university students and their community.

To ensure we provide high-caliber academic support, we require our volunteers to have the following requirements: (1) 3.0 and above cumulative GPA (during college or graduation); and (2) successfully pass the subject to be tutored with a solid ‘A’. It is required that each volunteer completes just one hour a week to remain an active member of the nonprofit organization. Additionally, Tutors at Reach is certified by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to award our volunteers with The President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes eligible volunteers who have completed the required number of hours.

Volunteers are provided the opportunity indicate which subject they hold both skill and interest in tutoring. If this is opportunity is something you are interested please contact Arash Babadjouni at asbabadj@usc.edu to obtain a brief application.

National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Pre-Law Conference

Each year, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association graciously hosts a pre-law conference during its annual bar convention for any students interested in exploring the law as a career path.

This year, NAPABA’s annual meeting and pre-law conference will be taking place in Scottsdale, AZ at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

The conference will feature an all-day program chock-full of useful sessions and networking opportunities for students interested in learning more about law school and careers in the law.  In addition, as a result of the generous sponsorship from both NAPABA and the LSAC, a number of travel stipends are available to assist students traveling to the conference from outside the Scottsdale area
