MLK student named Top Scholar in Regeneron Science Talent SearchMLK senior, Mert Sekmen, is the only MNPS student and one of only three students in Tennessee to be named a top 300 scholar out of nearly 2,000 students in the Regeneron Science Talent Search - the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists.
Mert developed his research project entitled, “Procalcitonin as a Predictor of Antibiotic Use in the Emergency Department for Children with Community-Acquired Pneumonia” as a part of his work with the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt (SSMV) program. Mert will receive $2,000, and MLK will also receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities. Mert is now in the running to be one of the top 40 finalists, which will be announced on January 22.

MLK Teachers of the YearEach year faculties across MNPS elect teachers they feel embody the characteristics of an outstanding teacher in the form of Teacher of the Year. Due to being a middle and high school, MLK has the privilege to name a middle school and high school Teacher of the Year.
Join us as we congratulate Mrs. Kelly Boyd, middle school Teacher of the Year, and Mrs. Katherine Prather, high school Teacher of the Year.

MLK Choir students travel to Barbershop Competition
Select MLK students competed in a Barbershop competition in Jacksonville, Florida from January 9 - 12. We know the quartet has came in 4th out of 20 groups from the United States. Congratulations to the quartet!

| The female engineering club FACES (Females advancing and Changing Engineering and the Sciences) will construct a can structure for engineering week. We are in need of blue Progresso soup cans (regular size) for this project. Please deliver all cans to the counseling office by January 31.

AP NightIt was nice to see so many parents and students in attendance for AP night recently. We are especially grateful to the counselors, administrators, and teachers who made it possible.

If you were NOT able to attend, or if you missed a session you wanted to attend, you can find more information by viewing the documents passed out that night here. If students have questions about specific classes, we strongly encourage them to reach out to the teacher of that course, either in person or via email. We welcome your questions!
Course registration begins next week, and school counselors will be visiting classes (beginning on Monday with the 9th graders and then moving on to the other grades) to explain the registration process and distribute information. Your student will get all the registration information, including graduation requirements, from the counselors. Those forms will require parent input/signatures, so keep a lookout for information from the School Counseling Department over the next couple of weeks. Registering each rising 8th-12th grader is quite a feat, and it takes several weeks from start to finish, so the counseling department appreciates your patience.

Call for poetry submissions2020 Nashville Poetry in Motion® - A 2020 Vision of Nashville
Overview: As part of the 2020 Nashville Poetry in Motion®, ten youth writers will have their poetry featured on an MTA bus wrap, fare cards, and advertising spaces, as well as in a zine anthology. High school and middle school writers are welcome to submit with a final deadline of Friday, January 17. From this pool of submissions, ten finalists will be selected. Poems are limited to 25 words and 10 lines maximum.
Theme: Powerful writers and artists see the world and help others see the world through fresh eyes. They see potential and connections that others do not and reveal new possibility for us all. Metro Arts and Southern Word know these visionaries often emerge from the next generation. For this year’s Poetry in Motion® initiative, we are seeking poems that offer a new take on what Nashville could be. In 25 words or less, can you create a vision that helps show us a new way? Within our existing Nashville landscape, can you see something that others have not seen yet? Can you create a connection or witness an opportunity that has gone unnoticed? Can you elevate something in Nashville that has gone under-recognized? Here are some questions and thoughts to prompt writing. These prompts are intended as a starting point and should not set limits or boundaries on the ideas that emerge from them.
- Pretend you have a magnifying glass. Observe a small piece of Nashville that has gone unnoticed through this magnifying glass.
- Choose two seemingly unassociated objects in Nashville. Use your poem to demonstrate the connection between these objects.
- Choose a location in Nashville that provides a distinct point of view. Describe how Nashville looks from that point of view.
- Celebrate something wonderful in Nashville.
- Describe how Nashville would change if we expanded that wonderful thing as much as possible
Deadline: 11:59pm on Friday, January 17
Eligibility: Poetry in Motion® is open to any middle and high school age youth who live in Nashville. Each entrant may submit one poem of no more than 25 words and 10 lines in any style except concrete (shape poems) or black out poems (marker covering another author's text to create a poem). The content of the poem should be the original, individual work of the entrant and needs to be appropriate for a general audience. Entrants must complete the entry form in its entirety and may submit no more than one poem. Employees and agents of Metro Nashville Government and their immediate families are ineligible and may not enter. Selected poets from last year’s Poetry in Motion® are also ineligible. All minors below the age of 18 who have their poem selected will need a parental release signed prior to publication.
Copyrights: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted poem. By entering the contest, you consent to the publication and usage of your poem by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the program partners.
Notification and Acknowledgement: Selections will be announced in April. Metro Arts and its partners may include poems in other print and on-line materials as part of the program roll-out. Selected writers will receive a $100 honorarium for participation in the program and may be asked to appear at an acknowledgement event.

Winter Blood DriveOur winter Blood Drive is almost here! MLK is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive in the Big Gym from 9:00-2:00 on Monday, 1/27.
Students, please stop by Ms. Cain's classroom to set up your appointment. If you donated in the fall, you are eligible for this blood drive.
A few exciting things:
- If you donate blood 3 times, you will receive a red cord to wear at graduation!
- The sports team, club, student organization, etc. with the most blood donors will earn a pizza party from Ms. Cain.
A few important reminders:
- You must be at least 16 years old to donate
- Please see Ms. Cain for the required forms (16 year-olds have two forms, 17+ year-olds have one form).
Thank you so much for considering blood donation. We were able to collect 46 units at our fall Blood Drive!
