3i Initiative Year-End Highlights
| |
|
A Note From The Directors
As we end another year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the outstanding accomplishments of the 3i Initiative and its researchers. This Initiative has grown significantly since our launch in 2017, welcoming over 30 new investigators to the U, growing our ranks to over 250 investigators, publishing over 1,000 publications in 2021, and receiving 185 NIH grants in 2022. This past year saw the launching of the 3i-UCGD Bioinformatics Core. This core has been developed with the informatic needs of the 3i community in mind, and thanks to the leadership of Dr. Zac Stephens, it is now open and ready to help with the planning and analysis of studies in microbial genomics, metagenomics, and immunomics (including epigenomics, and bulk and single-cell transcriptomics). Through all of these accomplishments, the 3i community has continued to be a community for all researchers on campus, creating a space that fosters collaboration. Thank you for your continued engagement in the 3i Initiative, especially with over 200 of you at our 2022 symposium!
We also want to thank the initiative staff, Dr. Nicole Frank, Sara Salmon, and Samantha Weeks, for all of their efforts this year to keep the initiative moving forward.

U of U Health -Led Research Awarded $28 Million to Explore HIV’s Inner Workings and Vulnerabilities
A University of Utah Health-led multi-institutional research center that studies the inner workings and vulnerabilities of HIV, the human immunodeficieny virus that causes AIDS, received a five-year, $28 million grant renewal from the National Institutes of Health.
Since its founding in 2007, the CHEETAH Center for Structural Biology of HIV Infection Restriction and Viral Dynamics has published more than 300 research papers that have led to a better understanding of HIV and its potential treatments.
Wesley Sundquist, PhD, the center’s director and professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry at U of U Health, is leading 20 research teams from 12 institutions. With the grant renewal, the researchers will focus on: (1) Determining how HIV infects cells, (2) Understanding how host cells defend against the virus, (3) Analyzing how the virus becomes dormant and rebounds, and (4) Developing next-generation tools and methodologies to better understand the structure and mechanisms of HIV. Team Science Grant Updates
One of the primary goals of the 3i Initiative is to build interdisciplinary teams that are competitive for extramural multi-PI grants. To achieve this goal, the 3i Initiative uses a two-part cycle of a smaller team building grant process used to help start new collaborative teams. The follow-up cycle is our Program Project Planning Grant (3PG), which is used to help existing teams develop a competitive application for extramural funding.
