CC Senior (Un) Banquet
Due to pandemic restrictions, this year’s Senior Banquet became an un-banquet held in a tent instead of the cozy confines of the Refectory.  No food was served, as we gathered outside in our masks to celebrate the class of 2021.  As Assistant Dean Stewart read their names, accomplishments, and favorite CC memories, each graduate stood in place.  Instead of having the CC medallion put around their neck, students picked them up at the conclusion.  The grand finale consisted of CC faculty sharing brief words of wisdom and advice, and everyone lighting an electronic votive candle to take a piece of CC light out into the world.
Virtual Museum of the First-Year Production

The First-Year Production's Archival and Documentation committee has constructed an incredible virtual museum exhibit about this year's production, now available at https://sites.google.com/valpo.edu/fypcollection.  It provides great insight into the complicated process of putting together a virtual production.  A brief proof-of-concept video, reviews, and student reflections are just part of the content.

Remembering Dean Baepler

A special service of remembrance in honor of the founding Dean of Christ College, Richard P. Baepler, was held on Friday, April 16, at the Chapel of the Resurrection.  The author of Flame of Faith, Lamp of Learning: A History of Valparaiso University (2001), Dr. Baepler wrote widely and thought deeply about the value of a Lutheran Christian liberal arts education.  Here’s an inspirational example: “The Reformers . . .  were still able to break with the presuppositions of Christian society to recognize the power and value of non-Christian contributions to culture.  For government Luther preferred the smart Turk over the inept Christian.  The great pagan poets and writers were to be taught for their inherent value . . . .  Despite his dislike of Aristotle’s philosophy in general, Luther recognized the superior value of his treatises on ethics.  Reason was detestable when it led people to believe they could storm the gates of heaven through their own moralism, but it was an indispensable means when applied to human experience and life in the created order, and strenuously so for that important sector of the created order, the university.”
Changes in the Dean's Office
After three wonderful years in the Dean’s Office of Christ College, I have decided to retire this coming summer.  Professor Jennifer Prough will once again be serving as the Interim Dean, and Assistant Dean Anna Stewart will continue in her outstanding work on student-facing matters, so CC leadership is in good hands.  Decisions regarding a search for a permanent dean will be made next year, and I will be serving as a “consulting dean,” through May 1 of 2022 to aid in the transition.  Thanks for all your support during my time here in Mueller Hall.  I will be taking many fond memories away with me.  Blessings to all!
With compliments,
