Austin Peay professors participate in Fort Defiance Black History Month event
Clarksville Parks & Recreation hosted a Black History Month event Saturday, Feb. 12, at Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center, and two Austin Peay State University professors lent their expertise.
This free, educational event featured the presentation “Your Story and Lives Won’t Die Twice” from the following guests of the Mt. Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society (MOCHPS) and Austin Peay:
Delton Wells, U.S. Army soldier and member of MOCHPS - How Black History Month started and why it exists
Nick Nicholson, president of MOCHPS - History of Mt. Olive Cemetery
Phyllis Smith, Historian of MOCHPS - Select civilian and USCT biographies from Mt. Olive Cemetery
Mike Taliento, director of grounds and preservation of MOCHPS - Why and how we preserve Mt. Olive Cemetery, both the grounds/facilities and the memories of the people

Beginning Acrylic Painting Class

Location: Art + Design Building, Room 102
Instructor: Astyr Minic
In this class you will learn about value relationships, how to mix colors, and how to paint forms. We will discuss value composition, light and shadow, choosing a subject, the stages of making a painting, local color, and reflected light. You will leave with a better understanding of color, form, and more than one finished painting. We will use acrylic paint and supplies will be provided. No prior knowledge is necessary, all levels welcome.

Instructor: Jessica Fife
Class Max: 12 Students
Students will create an animal portrait with color, texture, expressiveness, light and shadow. Students will learn how to create an array of colors from a limited palette. They will learn how each brush functions to create a different effect in a painting. Color theory, compositional structure, figure/ground relationships, texture, and structural accuracy will all be emphasized extensively. There will be demonstrations and one-on-one time with each student in each class, to help further the painting process. By the conclusion of the class, students will have built their knowledge of core painting techniques.

Art + Design welcomed public sculptor Jean Shin to CECA Visiting Artist Speaker SeriesThe Department of Art + Design, with support from The Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, hosted award-winning public sculptor and installation artist, Jean Shin, continuing 2021-22 CECA Visiting Artist Speaker Series season.
“I love Jean Shin’s work,” said Michael Dickins, chair of the Visiting Artist Speaker Committee. “Known for her large-scale installations and public sculptures, Shin transforms accumulations of discarded objects into powerful monuments that interrogate our complex relationship between material consumption, collective identity and community engagement.”
