March 2021
Dear Woodard Families,

I’m pleased to report that reopening has continued to proceed smoothly.  Last week’s changes to increase social distancing during passing periods has made a world of difference.  It’s like watching a ballet after every class, and students already know their parts after just one week.  Also, despite having a few positive COVID cases when we first opened, it’s a success story that we didn’t have any school-based transmission.  It speaks to the collective efficacy of our safety protocols that, though no one practice is 100% effective, together they keep our school safe.

I want to give a big shout out to all families who are doing their part outside of school, particularly those families self-quarantining in alignment with state guidelines.  We had many families notify us that they were doing so after Mid-Winter Break.  Students who have quarantined are finding it manageable to stay caught up by accessing their work through Google Classroom.  While this isn’t a long-term solution, it makes it possible to do the right thing without falling behind.

This month’s newsletter has important information about a change to this week’s schedule, the upcoming registration process for next year’s classes, and a few more tweaks to our parking lot plan that will make it even smoother (and allow us to be better neighbors!).

I hope that our return to school as brought some joy and energy back into your home.

Schedule Change - Seminar Lessons are Back!

Woodward has long been proud of our Seminar program, where we’ve historically carved out half an hour of every week to provide lessons on a variety of social-emotional topics.  These lessons can lead to deep discussions that engage students on relevant problems in their lives or give them tools to navigate the changing relationships that come with adolescence.

This year, our Seminar program has been challenged because this type of learning does not work as well through passive videos or awkward Zoom discussions.  We did modify some of the lessons to present during remote learning, but now we are pleased to fold it into our in-person class time.  Starting this week and every other following week, we will be using the following schedule to give time on Wednesdays and Thursdays for Seminar activities:
We needed to adjust both Wednesday and Thursday to keep the balance of time for 1/3/5 and 2/4/6 classes.  Wednesday’s Activity Days will be used for a variety of school business:  informational presentations, emergency drills and community building activities.  For instance, this Wednesday, we will be doing our first socially distanced evacuation drill so that students know where to go in an emergency.  This Thursday’s Seminar lesson is on the important differences between rigid and flexible thinking.

Note to Online Only Families:  These schedule adjustments also apply to online only students.  Most of the Activity Days and Seminar Lessons will work with modifications for the online setting.  There are a few, like the evacuation drill, that do not.  1st and 2nd period online teachers will make adjustments to these activities/lessons for relevance.
Parking Lot Information:  Parent Pick-Up and Drop-Off

The Copper Top Business Park has requested that parents not pick-up or drop-off in this complex, as it is blocking access to businesses for their customers.  We really want to be good neighbors, so please either use our parking lot or the Island Church parking lot.

In the WMS Lot, the loading zone will work much better when multiple cars are loading/unloading at the same time.  This can happen when cars pull forward along the portables, even when there isn’t someone right behind you.  Only stop to load/unload when the car in front of you does so, too.  Thank you for your help in making this efficient for everyone!
