From Office of the Provost
October 27, 2021

To the campus community,

I am writing to share a few important and exciting leadership updates that directly relate to our CSU 2.0 academic goals and to our college realignment plans over the coming months.

Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation
Following the recent departure of CSU’s vice president for research and innovation, I am delighted to announce that Dr. Meredith Bond, who has served over 10 years as dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions, has agreed to serve as interim vice president for research and innovation from November 2021 through June 2023.

In addition to her distinguished academic leadership here at CSU, Dr. Bond is herself an accomplished and collaborative researcher. Prior to serving as a dean at CSU, Dr. Bond led the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and previously served as a senior researcher in the Department of Molecular Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic.

In exploring this opportunity with Dr. Bond, I was impressed with her ideas for engaging students in research initiatives, building collaborative research partnerships across academic disciplines and deepening our connections to key research initiatives regionally, nationally and internationally. She is very familiar with the research and health care community in Greater Cleveland and across Northeast Ohio. I believe appointing Dr. Bond to this position during this time of transition at CSU will offer us both the stability and the interdisciplinary connections that we most need as we advance our CSU 2.0 strategies.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Bond to this new role.

Dean Searches for Two Newly Configured Colleges
Over the coming months we will continue the work of realigning several academic units to form new colleges, integrating our campus community in new and exciting ways. One of these newly configured colleges will house CSU’s academic units focused on health and health professions; another will house our academic units focused on the arts and sciences. Both newly formed colleges will be operational before the start of the Fall 2022 semester.

Next month we will launch a national search for two new deans to lead our two new colleges. We are partnering with a national search firm to recruit a strong and diverse pool of talented applicants from across the country. The firm’s first order of business will be to work with the provost’s office to engage students, faculty and staff from across campus in order to construct a leadership profile for these vital leadership roles.

Through online and in-person listening sessions, we will seek your input on the strengths and needs of the colleges, the attributes of successful candidates for these important leadership roles and what makes CSU an exciting place for an academic leader to launch a new chapter in their career. While specific dates and times have not yet been set, the team from our search consultant will be on campus during the week after Thanksgiving to meet with key stakeholders. Our goal is for the two new deans to join us by July 1, 2022.

I’d like to close with a note of sincere gratitude both for Dr. Bond, who will serve double duty as interim vice president for research and innovation and dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions until a new dean for our health programs comes aboard next summer; and for Dr. Allyson Robichaud, our interim dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, who has served in that role since 2019. Dr. Robichaud will retire from her position next summer after serving CSU for over two decades as an accomplished associate professor of philosophy, a department chair and interim dean.

In the coming weeks we will continue to update the campus community on the status of our college realignment planning, including these very consequential dean searches.
Kind regards,
Laura Bloomberg, Ph.D.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
