Dear Wilkes Families,
Happy new year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful winter break. Nature welcomed Wilkes students and staff back to school this morning with a gorgeous sunrise!
We are jumping right back into a busy season. Conferences are just around the corner on January 25-27! This is an important opportunity for families to connect with teachers regarding their student’s progress as we approach the halfway mark of the school year. Sign-ups for Parent Teacher Conferences will open on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 3:00 pm via Skyward Family Access.
As I hope you have seen, BISD is exploring options to rename Wilkes. More information below. There will be several opportunities for community input. Please note the Public Hearings on January 10 and 17 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Sakai. Also, Amii Thompson, will be at the Wilkes PTO meeting on January 13 from 9:00 - 11:00 am in the Wilkes library to share the process. We hope to hear your voice.
Looking forward to all the new year has to bring.
Warmly,
Whitney

K-4 Bus Riders will begin scanning on/off buses beginning on Jan 9, 2023.
Starting the week of Jan. 9, 2023, students in grades K-4 will scan a NEW bus card when they board/disembark the bus --- and parents/guardians can track the progress of their students' bus routes.
New bus tags will be coming home on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. Please help students make sure they are attached on the right side of backpacks in an easily accessible location.
If you have problems enrolling in Here Comes the Bus, please contact the Transportation Department at transportation@bisd303.org and put "Here Comes the Bus" in the subject line.

WILKES RENAMING & PUBLIC HEARINGS
| |
As we have shared, BISD is exploring options to rename Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary to better align with BISD's mission and belief statements.
Since October, we have been collecting name recommendations, and the suggestion form will remain open through January 27th.
In addition, there will be two public hearings where community members can learn more about why the name change is being considered, the Renaming Committee's vetting process and submit name suggestions in-person or online.
PUBLIC HEARINGS - TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK
DATES: January 10, 2023 and January 17, 2023
WHEN: From 4-6 p.m.
QUESTIONS?: Contact Amii Thompson, Executive Director of Elementary Teaching & Learning at athompson@bisd303.org
*Note the hearings will be held at Sakai due to its central location

NEW TESTING @ BISD DRIVE-THRU SITE
| |
Starting on January 2, 2023, BISD will offer testing that screens for COVID and Influenza A & B.
WHAT: With one nasal swab, BISD students and staff can test for COVID and Influenza A & B using the BD Triplex test.
WHERE: Testing will be available at the District Office Drive-Thru Testing Center, 8489 Madison Ave. N (between the Aquatic Center & Ordway Elementary). The Triplex Test requires special equipment, so this is not a take-home test.
WHEN: School days from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during January. (Depending on the response and the prevalence of the viruses in our community, it may be extended into February.)
THINGS TO KNOW:
- A consent form must be completed prior to the test and is provided during the check-in process.
- In addition, take-home COVID tests will be available at the District Office Drive-Thru Testing Center and from Wilkes health room.
- Look for updated information on the BISD website prior to Jan. 2, 2023.
- Many COVID-test kits are good for months past the expiration date printed on the pacakge. Check your kits here.
- Care Connect - Offers free support to those who are isolating or quarantining for COVID-19 infections. Services include food deliveries and personal care kits.
