Good afternoon,

Over the past several weeks, we have been planning our approach to campus housing for the 2021-2022 academic year, including the recent invitation for all SLGs in good standing to have residential space in Edens Quad. We have been in regular communication with Duke’s health experts and COVID-19 response team, developing several different scenarios for the coming year. While all plans are subject to change based on the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are tentatively anticipating an improvement of public health conditions over the next six months. With this in mind, we are writing to share more information about what that means for campus housing.

We currently plan to resume many of our pre-pandemic policies in the fall, including the return to offering both single- and double-occupancy bedrooms, and the requirement that all first-years, sophomores, and juniors live in the residence halls, including those who studied remotely or lived in Durham for this academic year. 

We will continue our commitment to provide housing for students with a demonstrated need to live on campus. We will also continue to make sure that students who need housing accommodations registered through the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) receive them.

There will be some differences next year. While we await the Next Gen Living & Learning 2.0 Committee’s report, we believe these changes will be valuable steps toward developing a renewed campus community:
  • All rising sophomores will live on West Campus, in Craven, Crowell, Few, Keohane, Kilgo, Wannamaker, and Hollows Quads.
  • Juniors and seniors will live on West Campus, or in 300 Swift and Avana Apartments
  • All sophomores, juniors, and seniors are invited to apply to one of our Living Learning Communities, located on West Campus.
  • All bedrooms in Hollows Quad will be singles during the 2021-2022 academic year. 

We understand you may have additional questions and we encourage you to learn more on the HRL website. We will also send a follow-up email next week with more specifics about the housing process and timeline. The main things to note right now are:

All rising sophomores and juniors must complete the housing application between March 1-5 at 12:00 P.M. EST. Seniors who plan to live on campus must also complete the application. The application will invite you to preference a roommate and a quad.

You will learn your building assignment in late March and select your room at the beginning of April.

Again, be on the lookout for next week’s follow-up message. While things will continue to look different next year as the pandemic continues to evolve, we sincerely hope that campus housing will provide you space to learn, grow, gather, and connect. We look forward to having you back.
