The CMU Swartz Center Hosts Inaugural Family Business Leadership Series Talk 
The CMU Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship hosted its inaugural Family Business Leadership Series talk on Thursday, December 1, 2022, featuring Giant Eagle, Inc. Chair and CEO Laura Shapira Karet and Chairman Emeritus David Shapira to a standing room only audience. The event, which was open to the public and part of a running series, was organized by Tepper School of Business professor of Entrepreneurship Meredith Meyer Grelli and was kicked off by Tepper School of Business
Dean Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou.

A public panel discussion with Laura and David Shapira was led by Tepper MBA student Robert Gaydon, followed by a closed session for MBA students participating in the Family Business course taught by
Meyer Grelli.

The next speaker series will be held on February 7, 2023 featuring Stephanie Hickman, CEO of Trice Construction Company. Register for the February 7 talk here.

Cinder's Content Moderation Software Is Custum Built For Trust and Safety Teams
Co-founded by CMU alumnus and CEO Glen Wise, Cinder has officially launched, along with $14M in funding from Accel, Y Combinator, J2 Ventures. Cinder is the first fully integrated Trust and Safety platform dedicated to helping teams keep their organizations safe. Glen is also an Innovation Scholar from the 2018 cohort.

CMU Spinout MindTrace Named to the 2022 CB Insights’ Digital Health 150 List

MindTrace, a company spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2020 to commercialize innovations that protect a neurosurgery patient’s mind, has been named to the CB Insights Digital Health
150 list. The company, co-founded by CSO Brad Mahon, CMU associate professor of Psychlogy, CMU alumnus and CTO Hugo Angulo and CEO Max Sims, is creating a surgical-assistive software platform that utilizes brain imaging and behavioral assessments to enable neurosurgeons to efficiently evaluate resection plans and use the information to optimize patient outcomes.

CMU's Conservation Labs Selected To Participate in the AWS Sustainable Cities Accelerator for Infrastructure
Conservation Labs, a startup from Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Mark Kovscek, has been selected by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for placement in its national city infrastructure accelerator for startups. The startups chosen to participate are developing groundbreaking solutions to help cities address infrastructure-related sustainability challenges. Conservation Labs' first product, H2know, enables cost effective and sustainable water use.

CMU Graduate Ambassadors Visiting CMU Africa this Week for Entrepreneurship Forum 

Graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University's main campus are visiting CMU Africa's campus on Friday, December 9, 2022 to share entrepreneurial values and to provide guidance to students regarding the formation of their businesses. This initiative is part of an ongoing engagement to increase the connectedness between CMU campuses. 

An update about the CMU Africa Entrepreneurship Forum will be shared in the next Weekly Bulletin.

The CMU Swartz Center is excited to announce the 2023 McGinnis Venture Competition.

The
McGinnis Venture Competition is a platform exclusively for Carnegie Mellon University’s global community of student entrepreneurs, bringing together the best and brightest to compete for $60K in investments. All participants receive coaching, valuable feedback and an opportunity to raise capital. The multi-round competition begins with two virtual rounds and will culminate in a final live-round celebration on March 21, 2023. Read the requirements and guidelines here.
