Making the Most of In-Class Time

Of the concerns revealed in the recent student survey about teaching modalities, most surprising is the high number of students who noted that they would like in person time to be used more effectively. Perhaps we all now have high expectations for time spent when we come to campus, after commuting in winter conditions and wearing non-pajama bottoms for maybe the first time that week.

Here are some tips to make in-class time meaningful for you and for your students:

Implementing Active Learning in Your Classroom, provides examples of instructors starting small and suggests activities you can integrate into your *current* course plan
How to Make Your Teaching More Engaging, Chronicle Advice Guide
When the Cat Destroys Your Sweater, Knit Something New, post that summarizes a live panel and includes effective tips for engaging students despite widespread burnout and new student behaviors honed (for better or for worse) during remote learning. I particularly like Lindsay Masland's teaching strategy, described near the end of the page, that connects students to each other during class time and also is useful for catching up students who missed class. Win-win!

Bonus tip: Don't forget to submit Early Warning notices which connect students with the broader campus community, including advisors or access to the food pantry. A reminder email, with more info about the program, was recently sent by Jess LaGrange.

Digital Education Days 2023

The three days, and variety of times, are meant to offer the most flexibility to the most participants from our four campuses: Henry Ford College, Flint, Mott Community College, and UM-D. You'll get reminders for these virtual workshops to keep you organized. You can access recordings for any session you cannot attend.

Dr. Amy Collier, Associate Provost for Digital Learning at Middlebury College, will raise questions that we should all be considering: "what can we take away from pandemic-shaped teaching and learning that can improve our students’ experiences and their learning? In what ways is 'normal' no longer acceptable, and how can we advocate for changes that transform teaching and learning at our institutions?" Come hear Dr. Collier's ideas to move us toward more inclusive and student-centered approaches to teaching and learning.

The Return of Grub in the Hub

Come by the Hub for bagels and coffee. Drop in to talk about the DE Day keynote (whether you attended or not) or issues arising in your classes, to share ideas, to vent, or just to have bagels with colleagues.

Call for Applications

Hub Department Liaisons Program, Winter 2023 Focus: Offline/Online Teaching Strategies

Because of student concerns identified in the Fall 2022 Student Experience and Student Needs Survey quantitative and qualitative reports, this semester’s program aims to start a conversation about what teaching strategies work best with UM-D students in-person and what teaching strategies work best with them online.

Become a Hub Department Liaison:

Earn a $600 stipend for your work
Gather information from at least 5 of your colleagues
Share your findings on the Hub Blog
