Dear students,
By now, you should have received notification that Duke will cancel on-site classes after 1:00 p.m. today due to heavy winds and rain. We recommend spending your Friday night indoors as we wait out the storm.
If you're new to this kind of weather alerts or if you're needing a refresher, here is additional guidance to keep in mind:
  • Campus bus service will be suspended by 2 p.m. today, so please plan accordingly.

  • Dining services will remain open on East and West Campus.

  • Be mindful of your surroundings. Keep your phones and laptops charged and carry drinking water with you. It never hurts to be prepared!

  • Use your phone as a flashlight if the power goes out.  Candles are not allowed in residence halls.

  • Shut and lock your windows to keep out rain and wind-driven debris.

  • Check in with your friends. The Duke community takes care of each other, so please make sure your friends know about campus closures.

  • If you have a medical emergency, call 911.

  • If you encounter localized flooding, report the incident to Facilities Management (campus) at 919-684-2122 or Engineering & Operations (Duke Hospital/Medical Center) at 919-684-3232. Downed trees on campus should be reported to Duke Police at 919-684-2444.

  • Stay informed and check your email and texts for updates from the university. Updates will be found on DukeToday and via Duke Alert.

  • If you live off-campus, be sure to also check for emergency notices from the City of Durham and your power company.

  • If you have questions about your class meetings, assignments or exams today, reach out to your faculty members.  If you have additional academic concerns, contact your academic dean.
There's no need to panic – weather happens in North Carolina and everywhere – but together we can take steps to be prepared.
Stay safe and thanks,
Duke Student Affairs
