Luncheon with the Experts on Facebook LIVE - August 2020
James Howe, MD - surgial oncologist
October 1st - Laurie Todd, also known as “The Insurance Warrior,” was diagnosed with late-stage appendix cancer in 2005. Her insurer denied her surgery because it was “out of network.” Thus began her advocacy work, ensuring she received her surgery and helping other patients fight their appeals. She has won over 220 lifesaving appeals, all different diseases and conditions, all different insurers, all over the US. Laurie is an author, a speaker, and a role model for self-advocacy.
Jonathan Strosberg, MD - medical oncologist
October 8th - Robert Ramirez, DO, FACP, medical oncologist, has clinical and research interests in neuroendocrine tumors of the lung including DIPNECH, typical and atypical carcinoids, as well as lung cancer, specifically non-small cell and small cell cancers. Dr. Ramirez splits his clinical and research duties between the Ochsner Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Program & the Ochsner Kenner/LSU Multidisciplinary Neuroendocrine Clinic. He is active in clinical trial design as well as teaching.
Shikha Jain, MD
October 15th - Steve Mazan, stand-up comedian, inspirational speaker, and 15-year NET cancer survivor. Upon being diagnosed, Steve decided to dedicate himself to reaching his longtime dream of performing on The Late Show with David Letterman. Steve’s inspiring story of battling cancer while trying to reach his ultimate dream of performing on The Late Show led to an award-winning documentary entitled “Dying to Do Letterman,” which aired country-wide and is available on iTunes and Amazon.
October 22nd - Pat & Chuck Murphy. It was 2004 and Pat and Chuck were preparing to move to a new home – life was good, personally and professionally. Then Pat suddenly developed what the doctor thought was bronchitis. When she went into heart failure they discovered a neuroendocrine tumor on her bronchus. Chuck became the researcher, the person Pat could turn to for answers, for emotional support, for loving care; he is her advocate.
Shikha Jain, MD
October 29th - Alexandria Phan, MD, FACP, hematologist-medical oncologist, specializes in treating patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal system, cancer of unknown primary, neuroendocrine tumors of any primary site, GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor), thyroid and parathyroid cancers. “I believe that every patient’s cancer treatment should be personalized, and that cancer care should be based on scientific evidence and best practices,” says Dr. Phan. “I remind myself daily that what I do is a privilege.”
