Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Happy Friday! Tonight's updates:
| |
| Open Enrollment Applications – The application window to apply for out-of-zone schools via the Open Enrollment lottery is open through February 1 via the Enroll RPS Portal. This is your opportunity to apply for up to three schools outside of your "zoned school," including Richmond Virtual Academy. (Reminder: This is different from specialty school applications for schools like FMA or Community. That application window closed yesterday.)
A few important notes:
- Families will have until 4:30 pm on February 1, 2023, to submit open enrollment applications.
- We unfortunately cannot accept late applications for any reason. Please plan accordingly.
- As long as your application is submitted before the deadline, the timing of your submission will have no impact on the outcome.
- If you have additional questions, please email us at enrollrps@rvaschools.net.

| Young Kings at MLK – Great news! The Young Kings program at Martin Luther King, Jr. MS won a $20,000 grant from the Ujima Foundation to expand the program! This means more young men at MLK will have access to programming that promotes positive self-identity and supports their intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth.

- I would like to give a special shout-out to Mrs. Jennifer Williams, a 6th grade exceptional education teacher at River City Middle School. She is an excellent team player and her willingness to take on any assignment is simply amazing! She is very professional, respectful, and kind – and above all, sets high expectations for her students. Some parents have expressed how helpful she is with her students and how happy they are to have her as their children's teacher. She is a true model of what teaching should look like and I did not want to mince my words in giving her the well-deserved kudos!! Thank you!

She supports new teachers at Cary ES with kindness and deep instructional knowledge that improves student learning as well as increases the teaching capacity of new teachers. She fills hearts and minds on the daily at Cary ES.
- Mrs. McEwan supported health and PE instruction by leading her kindergarten students through an activity identifying and classifying different fruits and vegetables. This written work allowed the students to use written and oral language. Thank you for working in collaboration with the encore team at John B. Cary.
- Mrs. Singleton, Cary ES's assistant principal, is an excellent leader in many ways. She makes herself available for questions and, if on the off chance she doesn't know the answer, she will find it quickly and communicate it. She is supportive when she identifies the need for help and assistance. She asks open-ended questions and listens to the answers and helps support teachers, staff, and students in the way that makes the most sense. She is a positive and proactive planner and always follows through and communicates clearly and simply. We are thankful to have Mrs. Singleton as the assistant principal at Cary ES.
- Ms. Carrion has demonstrated a strong work ethic and dedication to supporting Cary ES's students in their academic, social, and emotional growth. As the librarian at Cary ES, she has organized the books in an easy-to-access way and continually adds wonderful books to the library's shelves. She is always willing to help out with the Climate and Culture Committee and almost single-handedly was an amazing personal shopper and cashier at our School Store/PBIS Reward event. Cary ES is lucky to have her reading to our students and supporting their growth.
