MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Sakai Families,

YEAH, school starts this week! We can’t wait to meet our students and get started with learning.

With every start to the school year, there comes a range of emotions from nervousness to excitement. This year, it seems those feelings are understandably increased. At Sakai, we recognize this and the need to spend extra time getting students connected and comfortable with their new learning environment. We also know that since learning will look different than before, students will need to be taught how to access their assignments, synchronous learning times and avenues for help. Just like we would normally take time to teach routines such as walking in the hall and cleaning up after lunch, we will take time to teach students the procedures they need to be successful on-line.

Families below are some important calendar items to note as we get started. Also, there are answers to questions regarding the start of the year, schedule and specialists. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your partnership. It’s so appreciated right now. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow and having a wonderful first week!

Drew Crandall
Principal

CONTINUOUS LEARNING Q & A
Sakai Continuous Learning Questions and Answers

Helpful Terms:

●     Synchronous refers to times in the day that classes are all learning together. At Sakai, this will be on Zoom. Your student will have scheduled synchronous learning times throughout the day.

●     Asynchronous refers to times in the day that learning will happen independently. This could be assignments on Google Classroom, videos, paper and pencil tasks, reading or other work.

●     Launchpad refers to the Google Site that is specific to your child's teaching team. The launchpad has all the information and resources your student needs, including access to their work in Google Classroom. Teachers will be explicitly teaching how to use their launchpad to create consistency and ease for students.

How does my student start the day?
School starts at 8:05. Students will log onto their classroom launchpad and answer the Question of the Day. Then, they will join their homeroom class (via Zoom) to watch the Sakai Broadcast and get directions for the day. This procedure will be taught, and retaught, to your student by their homeroom teacher.

What is the daily schedule?
There are some commonalities in our school schedule. We start at 8:05. There is a movement break from 10:55-11:15 and lunch from 11:15-11:55. Monday through Thursday school ends at 2:35. On Friday, school ends at 1:05 for teacher meetings. Homeroom teachers will provide more detailed classroom schedules.

How will my student ask questions and get help on their work?
Students will have multiple synchronous times throughout the day to check in and learn from their teacher and classmates. Additionally, students can message their teachers using their Frogrock email address.

Is attendance mandatory?
Yes, we will be taking attendance everyday. Because learning opportunities happen throughout the day, teachers will be taking attendance after 2:35. If your student was marked absent, you will receive a phone call that evening.

What specialist classes does my student have?
For safety purposes, when we transition to the Hybrid model we are keeping homerooms together as a group. This means, we are not mixing classes for specialist time as is traditionally done at Sakai.  Students will be enrolled in PE and art all year. Fifth grade students will also be enrolled in music. Sixth grade students are enrolled in either music or band.

How do I get technology help for my student?
If needed, please contact:
Mark Gurtler, Tech Support at mgurlter@bisd303.org
Cathy Grant, Librarian at cgrant@bisd303.org or 206-780-6530
