May 2018
Joy. It is such a nice, friendly, uplifting word. J-O-Y. Just saying the word out loud makes our faces smile. The thought of having our hearts and lives full of joy sounds so great, doesn’t it? I believe having our lives full, or at least partly full of joy, is a choice we make each day. Our Holy Father exhorts us to make that choice and helps us with his daily tweets and words. Turning the page to the month of May, with all of the end-of-year excitement it brings, makes choosing joy a little easier than a couple of weeks ago with snow, rain, and miserable weather holding our optimism at bay. In May, we graduate our seniors, spend more time outdoors, enjoy the beautiful blooming of flowers and trees, and soak up vitamin D when we can see the sun. I am honored to share with you the joy we are ready to experience this month up on our beloved hill here at Cathedral.

Probably our most recent highlight was the outstanding production of Mary Poppins last weekend. You may know the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to pull off such a fantastic performance; it is both daunting and exhilarating. Hats off to our cast, crew, boosters, teachers, and all supporters. If you remember Dick Van Dyke as Bert and his fellow chimney sweeps in the rousing Step in Time from the Disney classic film, be assured that our Cathedral thespians did great justice to this number, and then some. As our Fine Arts often do, this show represented us very well, with a variety of students from all over the city working together in sublime fashion to reach great heights.

Our teachers deserve a special shout out as they diligently and passionately continue to prod, cajole, and lead our students in preparation for final projects and exams. This is a tremendous challenge, especially in the spring, but our wonderful faculty is up to the challenge and then some. I honestly admire them every day.

Finally, you probably are aware we are ramping up for a grand celebration of our 100th birthday. After all, how often do we turn 100? As just one part of our year-long celebration, we are planning a special Holy Cross Pilgrimage to France. The pilgrimage would allow you to walk in the footsteps of Blessed Basil Moreau (1837-1866) founder of the Holy Cross Congregation. The itinerary includes 10 days of exploration in France (June 27 – July 7, 2019). The pilgrimage will feature the International Shrine of Blessed Basil Moreau in the church he once built that became his final resting place in LeMans and other amazing holy and sacred sites in France, including Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. We hope to receive your feedback on this opportunity. You can find our survey HERE.

Following the lead of our Holy Father Pope Francis, I wish you a joyful day/week/month/life on earth/life for eternity in heaven. After all, we live once here on earth, so why not make the decision to follow Jesus and allow our hearts and lives to be filled with JOY?

Yours in Christ’s joy,
Robert A. Bridges Signature

Mission Trip

On a Mission

Over spring break, Cathedral celebrated 15 years serving the Johns Island, South Carolina area. We continued our partnerships with Sea Island and Charleston Habitat for Humanity chapters, as well as served area schools. We are so proud of the work that was accomplished by our 76 students and their chaperones during this spring break mission trip. One of our Holy Cross values is Hope and as servant leaders, we are called to bring hope to others.
Shamrock Scholars

Thanking Shamrock Scholar Donors

What a joy for us to have so many donors attend our recent Shamrock Scholars luncheon. The Shamrock Scholars Program was created by alumni and friends who wanted more than a way to give — they wanted a way to give back and a chance to change a life. Shamrock Scholar donors commit to providing need-based tuition assistance for a specific student at Cathedral for all four years of their education. Donors are invited to remain anonymous or build a relationship with their grantee. God bless all of our Shamrock Scholars and thank you for changing lives and helping Cathedral maintain her promise of socioeconomic diversity. For more information on our Shamrock Scholars visit the Shamrock Scholars webpage.
Holy Cross Conference

Holy Cross Gathering

Cathedral High School was proud to host the Midwest Holy Cross Second Year Teacher/Staff Conference last month. Teachers and staff members from six Holy Cross schools, including Cathedral, attended the gathering. The conference is a chance for faculty and staff who are in their second year at a Holy Cross school to network with others and learn more about our Holy Cross values and traditions. Special thanks to Cathedral’s Holy Cross Integration Team for organizing such a well-received event.
