MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Sakai Families,

I hope you have been having a wonderful week! My family and I have been trying to take in this nice weather by playing soccer, riding bikes and walking Juno, our dog. I love fall for many reasons. It means the start of a new school year, full of new adventures and opportunities. It also means shorter days and cooler weather, so it’s important to take advantage of all the sun while we have it!

We have been so busy at Sakai planning and preparing for this school year. While there are many obstacles unique to this fall, our commitments to our kids remain as strong as ever. I am so proud to be a part of this staff and school community! It’s going to be a fantastic year of growth and learning. Earlier this week, I asked our teachers how we want our students to feel as we start remotely. Their ideas are represented in this word cloud:

As Sakai has for 20 years, we are focused on cultivating a caring and connected learning environment for your students. 

Sakai has so many wonderful yearly events and traditions. We are keeping those alive this year, just in an adjusted 2020 manner. The first one of these is our Ice Cream Social, which is traditionally the day before school. This year it will be a drive through event, in which families stay in cars and get to quickly meet their teacher, receive a bag of supplies and an ice cream. Fifth grade times are from 10-12 and sixth grade times are from 1-3. Please try to stay within your time window.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Sakai Intermediate School.  We are all excited to welcome your students to our Sakai community.  At Sakai we have been working hard in preparation to welcome your students this year to create a positive learning environment where your students will feel comfortable, safe and connected and have some fun.  This year our counseling department will have two counselors, Beth Hebert and Lauren Ruocco.  Beth Hebert is starting her 7th year at Sakai and will work full time this year.   We are pleased and privileged to welcome Lauren Ruocco to Sakai this year.  Lauren is coming to us from Colorado where her experience in mental health encompasses being a school counselor and a social emotional learning specialist.  When she is not working Lauren enjoys board games, scuba diving, skiing and spending time with family and friends.  Lauren is a half time employee and will also spend time as a school counselor at Woodward Middle School.  We are fortunate to have Lauren spend some time each week at Sakai.  There will always be a school counselor available to students, parents and staff during the school day.

The goal of the counseling department is to help all students have a successful academic, social, and emotional experience while attending Sakai.  We recognize that these are unprecedented times and even in “normal” times, students may experience a situation that takes their attention away from school.  Counselors are available to work with all students to resolve any difficulty that makes it hard for them to focus on their school work. We strive to help students develop problem solving skills and discover their inherent strengths as well as help them gain increased resilience. When students know they have one or more people to reach out to in a time of need, they are well positioned to face a challenge in a way that contributes to personal confidence and greater success.

During the first few weeks of school, we plan to visit all 5th and 6th grade classrooms via Zoom to introduce the counseling department and discuss how to access the school counselors. We also plan to meet with students who are new to Bainbridge Island via Zoom to help them feel welcome.

We are available to students via email, phone or a check in form available on our Google site Counselor Corner.   This site will be updated periodically.  Parents and teachers may also request we check in with their student.  We welcome and encourage parent calls and email messages anytime. We look forward to partnering with you to help your students succeed.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Please join us for our annual before school event where students will get to meet their teachers, pick up supplies and have a popsicle.

WHAT: Ice Cream Social

5th grade 10 am - noon
6th grade 1 - 3 pm
WHERE: Sakai

This year it will be a drive-by event in our parking lot.  Due to Covid restrictions, please do not exit your vehicles.  You will quickly meet your teacher from afar and pickup supplies and a popsicle.  

If you are unable to attend the Ice Cream Social during your designated time, you may pickup your student's supplies by stopping by the Sakai office, starting Wednesday 9/2, between 9 am and 3 pm. 
DISTRICT NEWS
We are trying to get technology needs squared away before the start of school. If your student is:

  • New to BISD
  • Attended BISD last spring but opted out of using a BISD-issued device and now would like one
  • Is having trouble with their BISD-issued device

DEVICE PICKUP FOR NEW STUDENTS & STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T RECEIVE A DEVICE LAST SPRING

Dates: Fri. 8/28 and Mon. 8/31

Times:  9 am to 5 pm

Chromebook/iPad Pick-up: New student device pick up, plus remaining students who need devices

Location: Commodore parking lot located off High School Road (between Commodore and BHS buildings)

We have worked out a plan for NEW BISD students. If your student is NEW to the school district, we will have the appropriate device ready for pick-up on Friday 8/28 and Monday 8/31. If the new student is in Kindergarten or Grade 1, they will be issued an iPad. All other new students will receive a Chromebook.

We are also offering the opportunity for students in grades 7, 10, and 12, who were unable to exchange their device on the previous dates, the flexibility to do so on 8/28 and 8/31. Note: Any student who opted out of a Chromebook last spring but needs one now may come to pick up their device on 8/28 and 8/31.

Important Note: We will be using COVID-19 safety protocols and require all families to wear masks and maintain a minimum of 6 foot distance.

During at least the first nine-weeks of school (and all year for the students in 100% Online Learning), BISD is offering WEEKLY meal kits.

Orders are placed by Monday for the following week’s meals. Meal kit pick-up is on Fridays at Sakai from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It’s important to note that meal kits are ordered by the week; we cannot offer students the option of “picking and choosing” their days. 

The meal kits include breakfast and lunch. The following options are available:

  • Vegetarian Meals (Meal Kit B)
  • Gluten-Free Meat Meals (Meal Kit C)
  • Gluten-Free Vegetarian Meals (Meal Kit D)

Applying for Free & Reduced Meals

Free and reduced-price lunches may be obtained by any student whose family income falls within the guidelines set by the US Department of Agriculture. We encourage everyone to apply — it’s quick and easy. In addition, students can apply at any time during the school year, and applications are reviewed as quickly as possible. 

If you qualified last year, eligibility carries forward for the first 30 days of the new school year. After 30 days, school meals revert to the full price unless a new qualifying application is submitted. Charges that accrue before a new application is approved are the responsibility of the parent/guardian to pay.

While the school year may not be beginning in a traditional way, that doesn't mean our traditions have to stop! In fact, it's more important than ever to maintain traditions when we are able to do so safely.

New immunization rules go into effect for the 2020-21 school year. However, the Department of Health has updated its recommendation that proof of compliance is necessary only when students are attending school in-person. Proof of compliance isn’t required during Continuous Learning or 100% Online Learning. 

These changes for 2020-21 include:
  • Tdap vaccine will be required for entry into 7th grade instead of 6th grade
  • Immunization records turned in to schools are required to be medically verified
  • The definition of conditional status has been clarified
