Celebrating our 50-Year Members

Over 100 barbershoppers reached their 50th year of membership with the Barbershop Harmony Society in 2020. We've captured a small collection of these stories here and have honored our newest Harmony Fellows during our Virtual Awards in September 2020.

Virtual Everyone in Harmony Chorus gets high marks

With all in-person barbershop harmony events canceled this summer, including our International Convention and Harmony University, Society staff members got creative. How could we provide an fun and meaningful experience where folks from around the world could still participate in an Everyone in Harmony Chorus?

Some of the most influential folks in the a cappella scene were enlisted to bring out the very best in our singers, most of whom were not used to singing in a virtual ensemble.

The 2020 Virtual Everyone in Harmony Chorus was the first virtual chorus project for the Society, and we were unsure how many would sign up. Nearly 700 people registered for some portion of Virtual Harmony University, with 352 of those attendees joining the Virtual Everyone in Harmony Chorus. We had singers from over 10 countries participating in this event alone!

A BIG thank you to our musical leaders, technical experts, logistics volunteers, and all of the chorus members who gave their time - and their performances! - to make this a reality. We couldn't have done it without YOU!

The Squares Barbershop Quartet film Guest Appearance on upcoming TV Series "Family Law"

Another great opportunity for the Squares, a Vancouver-based quartet with a talented cast of multiple members. Sean Huston (Bass-Director + glue of the Squares), Ty Philips (Lead-MOH Alum.), David Cotton (Bari-Arranger, Pianist + Member-at-Large of many groups throughout the Pacific Northwest + Evergreen Dist.), and Jeremy Wong (Tenor-Professional Crooner for Holland America Lines) formed up and spent the day filming a pivotal scene on Episode #106 of Family Law - Season #1.

The series stars Victor Garber (Annie, Titanic) as the head of a Vancouver-based law firm Svensson & Assoc. In this episode, the quartet is bestowed on 'Daniel' (played by Zach Smadu) as a crooning telegram announcing a message from his love interest. His response is not exactly what was expected. (*NO SPOILER ALERTS HERE!!)

This is the Squares second TV appearance and the guys were especially thrilled to share a scene with huge talent Victor Garber. The quartet was incredibly well-received on set. When the Assistant Director announced a wrap on the group, they performed another tune for the Cast & Crew, some of whom clearly had never witnessed a 'live' barbershop quartet before this moment!
Part of CORUS Entertainment holdings which owns many shows, networks, and channels across North America, the Premier has not been formally announced as yet but is scheduled to launch in January 2021 on GLOBAL TV + the W Networks. Tune in early in the New Year to see the Squares on the Small Screen and watch it all play out!

Why I'm a BHS member

Christian Hunter
Singing was missing in my life. Putting myself through college and then law school, I left things like singing, acting and football behind. In my mid-30’s I just had to sing again. I initially found barbershop through contemporary a cappella (Thank you, Men in Black!!!) and shortly after I was hooked singing my first tag I felt whole again.

I continue to be a member because the personal development is incredible. As a singer, as a person, as a leader. I never anticipated the amazing impact barbershop would have on my life and my family. It is fulfilling to see my contributions making a difference in the lives of others.

We have an incredible community. We are different from most other choral opportunities partly because of the larger musical and social circles to which we belong. The fun is infinite. Oh, and the Harmony Marketplace discount... I love barbershop stuff!

FROM NOW ON/COME ALIVE MEDLEY

WESTMINSTER CHORUS

"This was my first big BHS convention. The entire weekend was a whirlwind and I felt so lucky to have been asked to join in on some of the festivities. But my favorite part of being a spectator was watching and listening to Westminster Chorus kill it on this medley.
It was my two favorite things coming together in a way I had no idea it could. MUSICAL THEATRE AND BARBERSHOP? My mind was blown and I literally cried... and during my ugly cry and my clapping along suddenly I asked "Whoa, did they just throw a dude in the air?!'"
- Jenni Sheets, Lead
