Germany, 2025, Fatih Akin
It is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum, a remote outpost in the North Sea. The front is far away, and 12-year-old Nanning spends his days working the nearby farm and his nights fishing, helping his mother to feed their family. When their anti-fascist neighbor Tessa (Diane Kruger) mentions to Nanning that the war will soon be over, the boy – too young to understand the political implications – is pleased to imagine that his father, a Nazi officer, might soon be coming home. From Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker Fatih Akin (In the Fade, Head-On), AMRUM is a tender coming-of-age tale about the loss of innocence. Subtitles. 93 min.
Cleveland Premiere. Friday 9:00 pm & Saturday 6:50 pm

USA, 1964, Jules Dassin
Based on a comic novel by acclaimed thriller writer Eric Ambler and scripted by Monja Danischewsky, a writer of Ealing comedies, Jules Dassin (Riffi) returned to the screen in 1964 with a new heist movie, TOPKAPI. In it, Arthur Simon Simpson is a small-time crook biding his time in Greece. One of his potential victims turns out to be a gentleman thief planning to steal the emerald-encrusted dagger of the Mehmed II from Istanbul's Topkapi Museum. The dagger is attached to a weight-sensitive alarm, and one of the team members is a police informant. The planning and the execution of the heist inspired Bruce Geller to create Mission: Impossible, and the scene of a man lowered by wire to snatch the dagger inspired the best scene in Brian DePalma’s M:I 1. 120 min.
Two by Jules Dassin. New 4K Restoration.
