CONGRESS CONTINUES TO CONSIDER FY22 PACKAGE AND BUILD BACK BETTER

Today marks one month until Congress’ deadline for striking a FY22 spending deal. Additionally, its still uncertain when lawmakers will come to an agreement on the Build Back Better (BBB) Act. The Association of American Universities (AAU), of which Duke is a member, sent a letter urging Congress to pass the BBB, highlighting the legislation's importance for our nation’s health, economic competitiveness, and security.

SARAH BLOOM RASKIN NOMINATED FOR NEW POST AT THE FEDERAL RESERVE

On Friday, President Biden announced the nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin to serve as Vice Chair for Supervision of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Raskin has served both as the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and as a Governor of the Federal Reserve Board and also is the Colin W. Brown Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Law at the Duke University School of Law.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS INTRODUCE SEVERAL BILLS TO COMBAT FOREIGN INFLUENCE AND PROTECT U.S. RESEARCH SECURITY

Last week several House Republicans on Energy and Commerce Committee, introduced bills aimed to “combat and stop influence from the Chinese Communist Party in American medical research." There are seven bills in total which the lawmakers explained will increase transparency, improve oversight, and protect biomedical intellectual property through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

FEDERAL APPEALS COURT LIKELY TO REVIVE LAWSUITS ON UNIVERSITIES THAT CANCELLED ON-CAMPUS EDUCATION IN 2020

Reported by POLITICO Pro, a federal appeals court appears likely to revive lawsuits brought by American University and George Washington University students who were denied on-campus education when the coronavirus pandemic broke out early in 2020. The suits allege that the move to online learning deprived students of the in-person, on-campus education they purchased under an implied contract that D.C. courts have ruled exists between universities and their students.
