  • Congratulations to Dr. Natalie Brown Devlin – Austin Advertising Federation Educator of the Year!
  • We received a record number of Moody Shout Outs this semester, thank you for all who submitted! We will be sharing out today and getting them on our website this week. 
  • ULA Program: 15 courses were selected for spring 22 and we are in the process of hiring 15 undergraduate learning assistants (ULAs).

    Approaches to Concurrent Teaching
    Join us to discuss ways to plan for and manage classes when you have both face-to-face and remote students. We will host two sessions, feel free to come to one or both.

    Spring Brown Bags
    Our spring 2022 brown bag series will focus on concurrent teaching. Join us for any or all of these informal discussions.

    Course Instructor Surveys (CIS)
    Course Instructor Surveys (CIS) will be open between November 22 and December 8. Moody College values student feedback as one means of assessing teaching. The information collected in these surveys not only provides instructors with input on student perceptions of their teaching, it also enables statistical analysis regarding instruction across the college as a whole. 

    The utility of your results depends on a robust return rate. All Course Instructor Surveys are administered electronically at UT. But response rates for electronic surveys are sometimes quite low. There are, however, concrete actions you can take to boost the return rate for your courses. Please review the recommendations on the CATE web site for ideas.

    Teaching Spotlights

    Dr. Mike Mackert is the director of the Center for Health Communication at UT Austin. He has taught at UT since 2006 in the Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations. Dr. Mackert has been a Provost’s Teaching Fellow and is a recipient of the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.

    Katie Winters and Robyn Croft are doctoral students and certified speech and language pathologists in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Department. Winters and Croft work under the mentorship of Dr. Courtney Byrd in the Arthur N. Blank Stuttering Institute.

    Inclusive Teaching & Learning

    As the semester begins to wrap up, so will our “Small Changes for Inclusivity” learning community. Our final event, on Friday, December 3rd, will provide space to share the good work that Moody faculty have done in their classes this fall and an opportunity to look ahead to incorporating more inclusive teaching practices into spring courses. Thank you to all who have engaged with our learning community, we look forward to more opportunities to discuss inclusive teaching next semester.   
    3 Small Steps to Increase Inclusivity
    • Check in on students individually, as possible, and as needed, around major assignments or challenging times in the semester.
    • Normalize academic struggle and mistakes as opportunities for deeper learning.
    • Provide a list of campus mental health and wellbeing resources, emergency funding, food insecurity, academic support, etc.
    Find more small steps!
    Best Practice Feature: Group Work
    • Set expectations for respectful, professional collaboration.
    • Assign roles to ensure engagement.
    • Brainstorm qualities of an effective team, encourage group contracts.
    • Use peer review and reflection in the assessment.
    • Consider diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives when creating groups.
