BISD Update
Hybrid Learning Model

October 19, 2020

Dear BISD Community,
After analyzing the COVID-19 trend data with the Kitsap Health District earlier today and confirming our current staffing levels, I have decided to slowly bring back Hybrid Learning Model students for in-person learning.
As long as COVID-19 rates do not increase and BISD can maintain the proper levels of staffing (including substitute teachers), our tentative schedule is as follows:
  • Preschool, Kindergarten & 1st Grade: Nov. 9
  • Grades 2-4: Nov. 23
  • Grades 5-6: Dec. 7
  • Grades 7-8: January or second semester
  • Grades 9-12: Second semester
Bringing students back for in-person learning is a polarizing topic —  undoubtedly, some of you are pleased with the decision, while others are disappointed. This was not an easy decision to make and one that weighs heavily on me. However, I know that BISD staff have worked tirelessly to create a safe learning environment (as outlined in the Return to Learn Handbook) and that students greatly benefit from in-person instruction.

I also recognize that this is a fluid situation and things may drastically change over the coming days or weeks. The above dates are not set in stone. I will continue to closely monitor the health data and consult with the Kitsap County Health District. If there are significant changes, we will hit pause on the return date.

Guardians of hybrid students in grades K-1: In the next day or so, a form will be sent to you confirming your child’s in-person attendance and transportation. This will be sent to you via Skyward. Please complete the form by Sunday, Oct. 25.

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we work together during these challenging times. Please continue to mask up and practice the proper COVID-19 safety measures so that our county’s case count continues to decline.

In partnership,

Peter Bang-Knudsen
