Community Survey Follow-Up
Last month, we surveyed the Logan community about what qualities and skills we need in our next Head of School. 162 people responded and shared their thoughts on what Logan needs as well as the strengths, challenges and opportunities facing our school. This feedback is extremely valuable as we work to identify Logan’s next leader and has been used by our search consultant to develop our Head of School Position Statement.
Here are the highlights of what we learned:
-
Our community most values Logan’s experiential education opportunities for students, our individualized, student-driven program, joy in learning, our committed and high-quality faculty and close student-teacher relationships/individualized teaching.
-
87% cited recruiting, retaining and compensating high-quality faculty and 60% cited deepening our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as top priorities for growth and improvement by our next Head of School.
-
Over 60% of respondents named “skilled recruiter and development of faculty” and “experienced progressive educator” as the most important professional qualifications for our next Head of School.
-
Personal qualities critical for our next Head of School are emotional intelligence, warmth and empathy, action orientation and strong communication skills.
In the survey comments, many expressed a desire to preserve the qualities that have made Logan unique for almost four decades, including Logan’s “Golden Rule” (respect for self, others, and the world around you), mission of serving the needs of gifted children and the ability for children to be co-architects of their own educations. There was great optimism expressed about the school’s strengths in an ever-evolving world. As a search committee, we agree and very much take this to heart.

Next Steps
Due to the need to preserve the confidentiality of our Head of School applicants and candidates at this stage, we are entering a “quiet” phase of the search, although the HOSSC will be working hard behind the scenes. Please look for updates on the Head of School Search page of the Logan website and, as always, feel free to email hossc@theloganschool.org with any questions or feedback about our search process.
These past few weeks of hearing from our community members, seeing our school and mission through the outside perspective of our search consultant, and being in dialogue with other parents, trustees, alumni, faculty and volunteers has emphasized what a unique, innovative and magical place Logan is and how lucky we all are to be part of this community. Thank you for all of your contributions to this Head of School Search process.
With great appreciation,
Vanessa Pierce
