Ordway Elementary Newsletter
Wednesday May 20, 2020
Dear Ordway Families,

We are so proud of our Ordway otters and the work they have accomplished under extreme circumstances this spring! We understand every family is different when it comes to what can be accomplished in a day and over a week’s time depending on energy spent on home needs and varied support. So some students may spend 5 hours per week while others, in the same grade, may spend 10 hours per week - that’s okay. We still want to stay connected, so participating in the developmentally appropriate activities provided by staff fosters a connected learning community. Thank you for emphasizing to your child the importance of teacher check-ins so that they can continue in their growth and learning.

As the last month of school is upon us, you may be wondering about end-of-year-reports. As it has not been a typical "school" semester and the typical "report card" does not fit the circumstances, we have adjusted our reporting communication accordingly. Staff have worked together to identify major end-of-year standards for each grade level and specialist area.  A copy of these can be at the K-4 end-of-year report found at the district website: www.bisd303.org. While classroom teachers have provided instructional activities in the content areas of science and social studies, the key focus has been in the areas for reading, writing, and math.  K-4th grade students will receive a modified end-of-year report that will not include the traditional numerical scoring system.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards,

Melinda Reynvaan

Parents we would like your input on student placement at Ordway for the 2020-2021 school year.
There are many factors that impact placement decisions including balance of boys and girls, balance of students with specific learning needs, and class size.
Input regarding your child's learning style, preferred learning environment, social context or other factors the school may not be familiar with can be helpful to the placement team. Your input will be considered in the placement decision and shared with the new classroom teacher.
If you have a student entering Kindergarten through 4th grade next year, please complete the online form below.  4th grade families, you should have received an email with directions for providing feedback to Sakai.
Please submit your form by May 27th.  If you have any questions please call/email Office Manager Sarah Dunstan at 206- 780-1397. Thank you!

Annual Back to School Check-in

Parents, please complete the Annual Back-to-School Check-In (ABC) process for your student(s). This allows us to collect information about students returning to the district for the next school year. Having an accurate understanding of the number of returning students helps us determine staffing, class size and building capacity to better serve the needs of our students.

All current BISD parents: Access the ABC process on your computer through Skyward, or on your mobile device by choosing "Desktop" access in the Skyward mobile app.

Parents of new students to the district for the 2020-21 School Year (kindergarteners, transfer students): Access the ABC process after July 25, 2020. (That's when new students are added to our system.)
The ABC process also allows the district to fulfill annual notification requirements for public schools in Washington State in an efficient manner.
IMPORTANT: The ABC process must be completed and submitted to the district in order to access your student's class placement for next year. Class placements and schedules will be available in late August.
If your student is not returning next year, please inform the Ordway office manager Sarah Dunstan at sdunstan@bisd303.org.
