disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series Features Inclusion: The Joy of Drumming
The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. will host the 9th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series on Saturday, October 12. The featured film is Inclusion: the Joy of Drumming, which tells the story of a professional Japanese drumming group made up of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The documentary will be screened at 2 p.m., with an encore presentation at 7 p.m. Both screenings will be shown at Dipson Amherst Theatre, 3500 Main St. in Buffalo. Tickets are $5 per person.
 
A reception will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of disABILITY History, 3826 Main St. in Buffalo. A group of local advocates will speak about the concept of inclusion and explain what it means to them. Local artists with disabilities will also be present to exhibit, talk about and sell their artwork.

Columbus Day is Family Day!
Fun event for kids, families and grandparents

Looking for something fun to do on the upcoming school holiday? The Museum of disABILITY History will be open for a FREE family-friendly event! Columbus Day is Kids Day at the Museum of disABILITY History will be held on Monday, October 14, 2013, from 11 a.m.‐2 p.m., at 3826 Main Street in Buffalo.

The free event will include an obstacle course and Quest scavenger hunt for all ages, family puppet theater, Kids on the Block of WNY puppet performance, coloring stations, pizza lunch at noon and the showing of the movie “Dolphin Tale” at 1 p.m.

Michael L. Wehmeyer, Ph.D., professor of Special Education at the University of Kansas, will present his book, Good Blood, Bad Blood. A landmark publication in disability studies, his publication is vital to the understanding of the history of efforts to manipulate the human population. His presentation with Q&A is ideal for those interested in learning about quality of care for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, special education and Eugenics.
