MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

It was wonderful to hear from many of you over the past week. I am so excited for school to start. It’s going to be a fantastic year!

5th and 6th graders are at such a fun and unique time in their life. At Sakai, we understand students at this age and their needs. Our goal is to cultivate a strong sense of belonging, foster student voice, and address their individual needs. Our amazing teachers are trained and dedicated to ensuring this time is one of connection and growth. You will be able to meet your student’s teachers at our Ice Cream Social on September 2nd, however, Sakai is full of educators that will be supporting your student. I would like to introduce a few other staff members that will be working closely with you and your student this year.

Bridget Lockett will be partnering with me in the office as our Dean of Students. Bridget brings a wealth of experience having been a teacher at Sakai for many years and also serving as our Highly Capable and English Language Learner teacher for the past few years. Bridget is a positive and student-centered educator and is distinguished at meeting student needs. As well as being our Dean, Bridget will also remain in her role as our Highly Capable teacher.

Iris White is Sakai’s Office Manager as she has been for the past eight years. Iris knows just about everything there is to know about Sakai. If you have a question, Iris knows the answer. She is a kind and caring staff member and truly is the heartbeat of our school!

Beth Hebert is our amazing counselor at Sakai. Beth has been at Sakai for ten years and is dedicated to ensuring students are getting their emotional needs met. Beth is also leading our school-wide pilot of CharacterStrong this year because of her deep belief that all students in this age band need a social-emotional curriculum aimed at their specific needs and development.

Maria Kuffel will be working with me this year as administrative intern in addition to her duties in special services. Maria has worked in our special services department for a few years after working as a school psychologist at Wilkes. Maria brings a lot of expertise to our building and we are excited to have her at Sakai

Be sure to stop in and introduce yourself at our Ice Cream Social. One of the exciting things about a two-year school is that each year we have many new families. To help ensure you have all the information you need to feel ready for the year, we have a Sakai Family Handbook to answer some frequently asked questions. This includes our schedule and student drop-off and pick-up information. Please read this carefully if you are planning on this for your transportation plan.

Have a great week, Sakai!

STUDENT CHROMEBOOKS
We are excited to announce that all Sakai students will have take-home Chromebooks this year.
Incoming 5th graders will receive new Chromebooks on the first day of school.  This Chromebook will be theirs until they enter 9th grade.  Please discuss with your students proper care for their Chromebook.  Students are responsible for their Chromebooks 24/7 and should bring them to school, fully charged, everyday and take them home every afternoon.  They should always be transported using the assigned bag.  I encourage everyone to review the BISD Take Home Device Information.

I strongly encourage everyone to purchase insurance to cover accidental damage to their Chromebook.  Information on insurance and the enrollment form are available at Chromebook Insurance Program. The annual fee easily pays for itself. If you are in need of a scholarship to cover the cost, please contact the counselor, Ms. Hebert.

We are so excited to start a new school year and have students together again.

PTO NEWS
Sakai is fortunate to have a highly active PTO.  Meetings are held monthly during the school year.  The PTO adds to our parent involvement by providing volunteers, having meetings that explain our educational programs, and providing a representative to a district parent council. The PTO also provides input on key school issues. Your participation in PTO is invited. Your wonderful PTO board is:
  • Kelly Cancialosi-President
  • Susan Barron-Co-President
  • Emelyn Reister-Treasurer
  • Bob Ornstein-Secretary
We are fortunate to have them along with the many other important roles we have filled for this year. Their help this year is greatly appreciated! Look for more information about how to volunteer and get involved as the year progresses.
STUDENT MEALS
Families who think they may qualify for free and reduced price meals should complete an application for the new school year.
Electronic applications can now be completed and submitted through Skyward Family Access.
FAMILY HANDBOOK
Hot off the press!

Here is the 2022-23 BISD Family Handbook with key information about BISD.  This is a handy guide and a good place to start when you have questions involving the district's policies and practices.
