Life moves pretty fast

The past two years have presented a tidal wave of change. Most all of us have experienced disruption, and many of us sense a loss of control or direction in our lives.  For many, the pace of the change has been faster than we can often grow or adapt to.  As a result, the new circumstances we find ourselves in pose a challenge to how we understand the world and our place in it.

I try to think about change as a new path or fresh perspective. While not all change is what we choose, like the COVID-19 pandemic, changes do compel us to see the world in a different way.

We each have a unique way to manage and cope with change. Whatever your process is around managing change, be kind to yourself.  Be patient. Stop for a moment and let the folks around you know you appreciate them and that you are grateful for them being with you during this journey and extraordinary part of our shared stories.

As an 80’s kid from Chicago, I’m a big fan of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I share some words of wisdom from the movie that I try to live by:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Make today yours!

Our playlist is now over 10 hours long and continues to grow. This month AVP for Campus Life Dr. Shruti Desai adds her five songs to the  Student Affairs Mixtape. "These are all songs that ground me and remind me of what is important (well except Nelly. It's just a hype song, and he's from The Lou) such as my culture and faith, the people I love, holding onto hope, and dreaming."

And YOU get student demographics!

Did you know the Office of the Registrar now publishes semesterly data about today’s Duke students?  The dashboard, available here, spans five semesters and includes breakdowns by:

- Enrollment classification

- International student status

- Reported sex

- Reported racial/ethnic groups, including detailed, self-disclosed ethnic identities

This dashboard is updated semesterly following the census date and represents official counts per the Office of the Registrar. Though general in nature, these data points provide a clear picture of who our students are and the identities they may represent. Additionally, as you work with your own students, these dashboards can serve as a valuable source of information as you consider questions of access, reach, and impact. If you would like additional information on the dashboard, you can email
tableau-registrar@duke.edu. Additionally, staff from the Student Affairs Office of Assessment would be happy to discuss ways you can use the information found here in your assessment activities; please email  assessment@studentaffairs.duke.edu and we’ll be in touch!
