OISS Student Advising

Virtual Front Desk Drop-Ins

Bringing the front desk to you, virtually!

The student advising team at OISS misses being able to interact with students at the front desk. We were able to answer your general questions, provide immediate support, and get to know you better through our interactions. 🤗
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, we are operating remotely this quarter. We thought to ourselves...how could we possibly replicate the OISS front desk? Is there a way students can get in touch with a student advisor? 🤔

The answer is...yes! With this, we are excited to announce a new service from the OISS student advising team: Virtual Front Desk Drop-ins! 🎉
Virtual Front Desk Drop-ins
What does "Drop in" mean?
These sessions are called, “Drop Ins” because students do not need to reserve a time or date to attend. No RSVP is required, so students can drop in whenever it is convenient for them. Be sure to view the Virtual Drop-In advising schedule (button below.)
How do I join?
Use this link to enter the Front Desk Drop Ins zoom room:

When students enter the zoom room, their cameras will be off and their audio will be muted. Students will only be able to communicate with the advisor through the zoom chat. The advisor will answer questions audibly or through the zoom chat.

How will questions be answered?
General questions can be typed into the zoom chat section. The advisor will answer questions in the order in which they are received in the zoom chat. Questions should be answered relatively quickly, but it depends on how many questions are posted in the chat. Please note that all chat submissions are visible to all students in the zoom room and there may be several other students in the zoom room at once. This is a group advising session open to all students. Please avoid putting personal information, such as your PERM number, in the zoom chat.
What questions will be answered?
We invite students to bring their general questions to a virtual group advising session. A general question is not specific to an individual student; rather, it is widely applicable to many students.

If students begin asking personal questions during Drop Ins, they will be directed to schedule an appointment with an advisor. Appointments with advisors are typically available within a few business days.

How To Meet With A Student Advisor

If you would like to meet with an advisor, you have two options:
  1. Virtual Front Desk Drop-in
  2. Schedule An Appointment
If you just have a quick, general question, then we encourage you to use the virtual front desk drop-in option (described in the section at the beginning of this email.)

If you have a more personal, in-depth question, then one-on-one advising is encouraged so that you can share your personal circumstances with an advisor in privacy.
New! Advising Team Assigned By Your Last Name
To promote the most seamless experience for students as possible, advisors are now assigned by your last name. You are now empowered to schedule your  appointments directly through your assigned advisor through Shoreline! To schedule an appointment, find the advisor associated with your last name on our Student Advising Page. We also invite you to visit our brand new People Directory, where you can learn more about the OISS staff and the student advising team.
