MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

Last week students started participating in our annual tradition of releasing salmon into the stream behind Sakai. We will continue to do so this week and by Friday we'll have released around 3,000 fry. It has been wonderful to see how engaged students are while learning about the salmon and the part they play in our local ecosystem. It has also been so heartwarming to see their excitement at being outdoors together and watching their fish swim away.
Tomorrow will mark the 79th anniversary of the forced removal of Japanese Americans from Bainbridge Island, including the Sakai family. The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community and Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association will be hosting a pair of live stream events to commemorate and educate. You can find more information here. This Friday we will be revisiting our Unity Day lessons in COHO time and discussing how we all can be “upstanders” in our school and community. If you are looking for ideas and tips to talking with your children about race and equity, Bainbridge Island School Districts Multicultural Advisory Committee has some good resources.

I want to thank you all for adhering to our new safety protocols. It’s important that we continue to be vigilant as a community. While we hope you have a fun and relaxing Spring Break together as a family, we also hope you do so while remaining to be safe. If you do need or choose to travel, please follow the Washington Department of Health and Center for Disease Control guidelines for traveling. Thank you for your partnership.

Have a wonderful week, Sakai.

BAND INFORMATION
Sakai Band 2021-22
As we begin to make staffing and programming decisions for the 2021-22 school year, we are gauging current 5th-grade student interest in a 6th-grade Beginning Band class.
Guidance for Band in grades 7 through 12 recently changed allowing in-person Band instruction to occur with additional safety protocols, and we are cautiously hopeful that we will be able to extend that to Sakai.
