Welcome, Stanford Class of 2027!

We have been eagerly awaiting you and are delighted that you have chosen to spend the next few years here with us on the Farm.
Approaching Stanford, in the Office of Academic Advising, is the process that will guide you in your preparation for and transition to Stanford. Bookmark our website, approaching.stanford.edu, as well as our 2023 Approaching Stanford Canvas Course, and visit them throughout the summer to complete new student requirements such as your forms and housing application, to review important dates and deadlines, and to learn about life at Stanford.
In the weeks ahead, the Approaching Stanford team will communicate regularly with you as you get ready to start your Stanford journey. Check your @stanford.edu email frequently (webmail.stanford.edu) and look for this weekly newsletter in your inbox.
Our Approaching Stanford professional staff are here to answer your questions and ensure that your transition to Stanford is a smooth one. Be sure to let us know how we can help you.
We're also excited to introduce you to our Orientation Coordinators, the student staff in our office who will be spending this summer welcoming you to Stanford. Meet the OCs and follow them this summer @approachingstanford!

Approaching Stanford Handbook

If you're ready to dive into the Approaching Stanford process, begin by reading the Approaching Stanford Handbook online. This Handbook will serve as your primary introduction to Stanford and will answer many of your questions. We encourage you to share the Handbook, along with these weekly emails, with your parents and guardians. Sections include:
  • Introduction to University Values & Policies
  • Academic Life
  • Campus Community
  • Life on the Farm
  • New Student Orientation

New Student Requirements

We're using Canvas, a secure Stanford portal, to help you track and complete your Approaching Stanford Requirements, including the Approaching Stanford Forms & Housing Application, Vaden Health Forms, and more. Please review the requirements in Canvas and note important deadlines on your calendar.
All incoming new students must complete these requirements by the posted deadlines in order to enroll in your Autumn Quarter courses.
To log in, go to canvas.stanford.edu, click on "SUNet Sign In," and select the "Approaching Stanford 2023" course.

Approaching Stanford Forms & Housing Application

All new students are required to complete the Approaching Stanford Forms and Housing Application. The Forms are due Wednesday, June 7, at 5:00 p.m. PDT so you have plenty of time to submit them. Since we do not see your admission application, these forms are a critical part of getting to know you and learning how we can best support you.
As you prepare to fill out your Forms, please read:

Getting Started - Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I start?
What will I need to do this summer?
How do I communicate with Stanford?
  • Always use your Stanford email account when contacting Stanford offices by email.
  • Call us at (650) 723-7674 to talk with the Approaching Stanford team.
  • Post questions in Slack or on the Canvas Q&A Discussion Boards.
  • Remember that you will need to use Two-Step Authentication when accessing email and secure sites. Never give your SUNet ID password to someone else (including parents/guardians).
How do I update my Preferred Name?
  • Log in to Axess and under the "Student" tab, navigate to the "Personal Information" section to update your Preferred Name.
  • If you do not want your middle name to appear on your account (Stanford email, Canvas, etc.), you can delete it from the Middle Name field.
When do I enroll in classes? Why is there an Enrollment Hold that is "Past Due" on my account in Axess?
  • All new students have a "New Student Advisement" Enrollment Hold on your student account, which will be released in September after you have arrived for New Student Orientation. Don't worry, this hold is not "Past Due" and there is no action you need to take at this time.
  • International students have an additional hold that will be released by the Bechtel International Center after you attend the required immigration session during International Student Orientation in September.
  • Enrollment holds will be lifted and course enrollment for new students will open in September during NSO after the academic advising presentation. Note: You must complete all Approaching Stanford Requirements, including submission of health forms, final transcripts, and test scores (if applicable) in order to enroll in your courses.
When will Stanford begin communicating with my parents/guardians? Where can they learn more?
  • After you provide your parent/guardian information on your Approaching Stanford Forms, we will send monthly e-newsletters to your parents and guardians beginning mid-June. Please ask them to review the Parents and Guardians tab on our website.
What is Stanford's COVID-19 vaccination guidance?
  • As of April 10, 2023, the university no longer requires – but continues to strongly recommend – COVID vaccinations and boosters for faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and students.
  • Review Covid-19 current policies and FAQs for students.
When is Move-In and New Student Orientation (NSO)?
  • New Student Move-In Day: Tuesday, September 19, 2023. All new students must be checked in by 5:00 p.m.
  • NSO: September 20-24, 2023. NSO is required for all new students the week before Autumn Quarter begins. Please do not make any outside plans during this period of time.
  • Families: We invite families to join us on Move-In Day and the first day of NSO, September 19-20.
  • International Student Orientation (ISO): September 16-19, 2023. ISO is required for all international students who are not US citizens/permanent residents.
What else?
  • We know you're excited. So are we. But there's no need to rush - you have plenty of time to prepare for Stanford. Take a moment to pause and reflect. Enjoy your final days of high school. Give thanks to those who have helped you get to where you are today. Know that there will be more people ahead to support you, and that in time you'll be helping those who will come after you.
