ATMIA Africa July Newsletter 2019
ATMIA Africa July Newsletter 2019
Dear Member,

Welcome to the July newsletter for ATMIA Africa.

Last month the Middle East region held their annual conference, Future of ATMs & Payments, Middle East & Beyond, in Dubai. We would like to express our gratitude to the ATMIA team for all their efforts and of course a big thank you to all of our speakers, exhibitors and attendees.

This month we will be looking at how Zambia has implemented a new Nation Financial Switch to boost payments interoperability and to reduce costs.

We have our Regional Steering Committee coming up tomorrow. If you are interested in joining the call, please feel free to email me to say that you would like to be included in the call.

Kind regards,
Andrew

News Update: Zambia’s National Financial Switch to boost payments interoperability and reduce costs
Zambia’s National Financial Switch (NFS) went live with ATM and point of sale (POS) transactions in June this year, marking a major milestone in the country’s strategy to create a more secure, efficient, and cost-effective payments environment. The NFS is Zambia’s first shared national payments platform and facilitates interoperability of digital payments throughout the country.
The NFS started in 2014 as a project under the Zambia Electronic Clearing House – an organisation owned by Zambia’s commercial banks and reserve bank. The migration of ATM and POS transactions from the Visa platform to the local switch is the first phase of the project. In the second phase, mobile payments switching will be migrated on to the platform.
The NFS creates a common payments loop for ATM, POS, Internet banking, mobile banking, agency banking and other customer driven e-commerce products and services. The Bank of Zambia anticipates that the NFS will help to drive down transaction fees and bank charges because transactions will no longer attract international switching fees.
The Zambia banking sector also hopes the NFS will boost efforts to reduce dependency on cash and improve financial inclusion. Fourteen of the 18 registered banks in Zambia have migrated to the switch.
